Canonical expands Long Term Support to 12 years starting with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Whilst most readers will be aware that this was going to happen, Canonical has made it official that Ubuntu LTS releases can get additional legacy support (two years), beyond Pro support already available. This will mean users of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, with Ubuntu Pro support that would end in April 2024, there now is a further two year option of legacy support.

Trying out Ubuntu 23.10 on x86-64-v3 rebuild on Azure

Will French writes about a x86-64-v3 built available for Azure for testing purposes. We’re reminded it shouldn’t be used for production, and given details as to its use.

Attention Upgrading noble systems

Julian Andres Klode (28 March 2024) puts out a warning for Ubuntu noble (24.04) users that they should “pay close attention to dist-upgrade output”. We’re given reasons for this, and told the situation will be resolved later today.

Alan Pope discusses contributors to the Ubuntu project that aren’t applying for Ubuntu membership. Alan then introduces PUMP, a potential Ubuntu Member program as a mentorship program to help these non-member contributors. We’re given details on how the mentor-mentee relationship will operate, and move the mentee towards applying for Ubuntu membership.

Bringing back Flutter translations

Tim Holmes-Mitra reminds us of “offensive translations” of last October, that caused a pause on translations until a new process (that can ensure quality) was put in place. We’re told that new process is now here, and given details of the process for translations for Flutter projects going forward.

Ubuntu will manually review Snap Store after crypto wallet scams

Kevin Purdy reminds us of fake crypto wallet uploads appearing in the Snap Store, that should soon be a thing of the past. With mention of Alan Pope’s prior blogs on the subject, we’re reminded of the difference between what Canonical’s “Safe” branding actually represented, and what end-users frequently thought it meant. Kevin also covers Mark Shuttleworth’s response, and moves on the Snapcraft forum, even covering Flathub increasing some validation processes too.

Ubuntu 24.04 Makes Tiny Tweak to Hugely Improve Gaming

Joey Sneddon reports a change to a setting which will improve game performance for players using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. We’re given comparisons with some other GNU/Linux distributions, and told this change could benefit game players making heavy use of memory-mapped I/O.

Microsoft Engineer Sends Rust Linux Kernel Patches For In-Place Module Initialization

Michael Larabel marvels at Microsoft engineer Wedson Almeida Filho contributing patches to the Linux kernel that improve Rust programming language support. We’re told Wedson started contributing to Rust for Linux back when he worked for Google, and that his development hasn’t slowed since moving to Microsoft. Ubuntu 24.04 Swaps Cheese for GNOME Snapshot

Joey Sneddon tells us Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will be using Snapshot as its default webcam app (replacing Cheese). We’re given some history of Ubuntu and the Cheese app, before moving to GNOME’s replacement Snapshot app. We’re also told that Cheese exists in the repositories should we prefer it.

Ubuntu in the Wild: Distro Glimpsed in Nature Film ‘Nocturnes’

Joey Sneddon tells us about the Nature documentary Nocturnes, which contains “lush cinematography, a transportive soundscape, and a ‘mediative’ documentary approach”. We’re told a scientist studying moths is using Ubuntu Desktop, and can be seen using GIMP.

GNOME’s Mutter Lands DRM Sync Obj v1 Support For Explicit Sync On Wayland

Michael Larabel reports the linux-drm-syncobj-v1 Wayland protocol is now supported by GNOME’s Mutter compositor. Along with details of what this means (useful for NVIDIA drivers and Wayland for example), we’re told this has been in review for six months, and given links to the merge request.
