Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) released

Utkarsh Gupta on behalf of the Ubuntu Release team announces the release of Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin). This post gives us many details, with links for even more. We’re told how we can download the new release, including flavors and more. A run down of the software included in the release is included in this detailed post.

We’re reminded what Steve Langasek gave to the Ubuntu Community over many years, and how we’re still benefiting from that today. Thanks is given to Steve, who passed away earlier this year, with this released dedicated in his honor.

Extended Security Maintenance for Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa) begins May 29, 2025

Florent ‘Skia’ Jacquet, of the Ubuntu Release team, reminds us Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was released 5 years ago, and is fast approaching its End of Standard Support. We’re told Extended Security Maintenance (ESM) starts on May 29, 2025. This warning post gives links for release-upgrade advice, so existing users can plan their upgrades in these remaining weeks of standard support.

Ubuntu 25.10 is Officially Named ‘Questing Quokka’

Joey Sneddon tells us that Ubuntu 25.10 will be Questing Quokka. Joey also reminds us of the April 1st ‘tweet’ that turned out to be more of a quiz, though it did include the Quokka animal. Joey gives us a definition of Questing and tells us of the “ridiculously cute” Quokka (photo included).

GNOME 47.6 Fixes Black Screen Issue on Multi-Monitor Setups with NVIDIA Driver

Marius Nestor informs us of the maintenance release of GNOME 47.6 which addresses some issues via bug fixes. First issue discussed is black screen issues experienced by NVIDIA users which are fixed by Mutter changes. Epiphany, Nautilus, and other updated apps receiving fixes are also mentioned.
