Rubi1200 | Membership Application

About Me

Just an ordinary Linux user and enthusiast, father of two sons and two cats.

I first came across Linux in 2005 after watching an interview with Klaus Knopper, the creator of Knoppix. I was immediately fascinated by the concept of running an entire operating system from a DVD, and thus began my journey.

Around 2006, I installed Dapper Drake (fond memories!), but I think my favourite version was Lucid Lynx.

Over the years, I have explored almost every distro out there.

My current triple-boot setup (in no particular order): Ubuntu, Kubuntu, EndeavourOS.

Contributions

In March 2010, I joined the Ubuntu Forums. From the outset, I was deeply impressed by the spirit of a community whose goal was to help others, no matter their level of knowledge or experience.

Together with forum member bcbc and former staff member drs305, I put together the Wubi Megathread, identifying a need at the time to consolidate information and support in a more coordinated effort.

Around 2011, I was invited to become a moderator, and continued supporting the community to the best of my abilities.

Transition to Ubuntu Discourse

Despite some initial hesitation (and with prompting from @Wild_Man), I joined Ubuntu Discourse in November 2024 and quickly discovered what an amazing wealth of knowledge and experience is being shared and communicated here.

Equally impressive is the willingness to share ideas, offer technical support, and continue the spirit that made the Ubuntu Forums a special place over the years.

Future Goals

  • Welcoming new users:

As on Ubuntu Forums, I believe it is essential to welcome users and make them feel at home as soon as possible — something I have always tried to do.

  • Offering technical support:

I will continue to provide support to the best of my abilities.

  • Improving tag usage:

I believe that tags on Ubuntu Discourse are an under-utilized and undervalued resource. I have identified what I believe is a need to reorganize, merge, rename, and recategorize tags to improve search functionality and streamline how they are assigned.

I hope in the near future to present something to the community.

Rubi1200 is an absolute gem to this community. Their wealth of knowledge and ability to discern what is correct from incorrect, right from wrong, and their technical skills have shown themselves to be an absolute vital part of the Ubuntu Discourse. While I haven’t seen them in their activity on the Forums, the Discourse activity speaks for itself over the past six months. I also have it on good authority their activity in the Forums was of the same quality and level.

I happily endorse Rubi1200 for Ubuntu membership.

I just could not say it any better than @eeickmeyer
I’ve known Rubi for more than a Decade, and has always shown his devotion to helping others, And I had a chance to get to better know Rubi as Staff in UF. Behind the scenes.
Good Job @rubi1200

I fully endorse Rubi1200, I am very thankful he made the move to Ubuntu Discourse, he had reservations but it is obvious he has fully embraced the move and has put in the hours and effort to learn how to use Ubuntu Discourse offering support and welcoming new users and flagging posts.

Rubi1200 also gives suggestions to the moderators on how to improve the overall user experience.

I had a private conversation with him a couple of weeks ago about his thoughts on reorganizing the categories and tags here and I look forward to seeing his plan.

I was a moderator on the Ubuntu Forums at the same time he was when I was a new moderator he guided me and helped me learn the ins and outs of moderating, he has always been very helpful, polite and kind to all.

Rubi1200 exemplifies what Ubuntu means and the Code of Conduct.

When I saw @rubi1200 's application, I thought: “It’s about time!”

Not only does he have technical ability, he has (despite initial misgivings) become one of our most enthusiastic supporters, showing willingness to help others find their way around and make best use of the software. I’ve observed on a number of occasions how rubi1200’s friendly and welcoming approach has helped ease what could have been a tense situation. To me, this is just as important as the technical when it comes to building a community.

I have no hesitation in recommending him for Ubuntu Membership.

I’ll add my voice to the thread. There’s not much that I can add to what has already been said. Rubi has been a positive contributor for quite some time, and I’m pleased that Rubi has applied for membership.

I’ve interacted with Rubi for only two months, but I have to say that the contributions of Rubi in this Discourse instance are already very substantial.

A very strong +1 for Rubi’s Ubuntu membership.

I’m another +1 for Rubi’s Ubuntu membership.

I’m one (of a number as I understand it) that have been trying to encourage Rubi to apply, as I see benefit in the quality of Discourse contributions.

I’ve suspected Rubi hasn’t applied earlier, not as much as at the “significant” but over “sustained” requirement, as he didn’t join this site until 23 Nov 2024, which is less the one cycle or six months norm for sustained, but the returning member (via UF), to me carries weight, and eases the decision (as I see it).

I endorse Rubi1200’s application.

I wasn’t much a visitor to Ubuntu Forums, but I’ve seen Rubi in action on Discourse and I like what I see. I can’t really add much more here that hasn’t already been said, but I really want to echo @eeickmeyer 's statements. Clearly, they have good discernment. They’re also willing to ask questions and learn new things. There’s a certain amount of humility that is most appreciated.

+1 from me.

Same here  you should definitely share some pictures!

I agree with this exactly, although I can’t really provide a full endorsement.

Thank you @Wild_Man

Can you please add me here so I can use the flair.

Thanks.

You have been added to the Ubuntu Membership launchpad group so that is all you should need but it may take a bit for the servers to sync, I know it can take up to 48 hours for your Ubuntu email address and I do not remember but that may be required also. I am on my cell I can check when I get home.
