New Ubuntu Community Council 2024

Merlijn Sebrechts, on behalf of the Ubuntu Community Council, reports the new Ubuntu Community Council members: Heather Ellsworth, Scarlett Moore, Nathan Haines, José Antonio Rey, Thomas Ward, Merlijn Sebrechts, and Aaron Rainbolt. They’ll serve for two years. Valued members Khairul Aizat Kamarudzzaman and Jason C. Nucciarone, and all who stood are thanked, including outgoing Council members Monica Ayhens-Madon, Chris Guiver, and Torsten Franz.

The highlights of the past week are a new lxc command for creating files, symbolic links, and directories without specifying their source, and the ability to delete TLS and OIDC fine-grain identities. Additionally, new LXD Terraform provider release [Release v2.4.0 · terraform-lxd/terraform-provider-lxd · GitHub] brings support for managing storage buckets.

Ubuntu 24.10 Concept heart Snapdragon X Elite

Tobias Heider announces the “the next iteration of our Ubuntu concept image for Qualcomm Snapdragon laptops with our new X Elite developer preview”. Providing the goal of the developer preview, which expands from the prior preview which focused on just a single device, to support as many devices as possible. To achieve this goal, help in testing this preview is requested. A list of devices it’s known to work with is provided, as well as a list of not yet supported devices. Details on helping test with hardware you have access to is provided.

IntelⓇ Neural Processing Unit (NPU) Driver Snap Available for Accelerating AIML Workloads on IntelⓇ Core Ultra Processors

Will French announces “the availability of the intel-npu-driver snap”. We’re told this is “an AI inference accelerator built into” Intel Core Ultra processors. This post tells us how to install it, and tells us to ‘stay tuned’ for better integration with NPU plugins.

Please try out dracut

Benjamin Drung tells us Ubuntu is “considering replacing initramfs-tools by Dracut as initrd generation tool in future Ubuntu releases”. We’re then told existing Ubuntu 24.10 users can give it a try now, as that release already has it shipped. This post then tells users how to test it out if they’re willing, giving details of what to explore first, and how to report success or what to file bugs against for problems.

Ubuntu Governance Sync Meetings 2025

“Following the success of the Ubuntu flavor sync meetings, we are starting Ubuntu governance sync meetings in 2025. These meetings will serve as a baseline for collaboration and coordination across all the Ubuntu community governance bodies. To keep a familiar format and a schedule that works well across time zones, we are going to use the same framework of the Ubuntu flavor sync meetings.” Meeting details, the schedule, and the point of contact are provided.
