Kernel Version Selection for Ubuntu Releases

Brett Grandbois outlines the duties of the Canonical Kernel Team in Linux’s kernel selection. Firstly we’re reminded of the differences between upstream Linux kernels and Ubuntu release philosophies, and the problems that can occur because of timing differences. Then Brett moves to how this impacts the upcoming Ubuntu 24.10 release. The problems with the current policy are mentioned, and we’re then informed of a new policy, along with some definitions of ‘recurring terms’.

Hi team, for the Ubuntu OnAir section I’m going to suggest ep. 21 of the open documentation hours since we went directly from ep.19 to ep.22 in the previous two UWN newsletters (cc: @degville)

Here’s how it could look like:

Documentation Office Hours - Episode 21 - The differences between a how-to and a tutorial

“In this recording, we attempt to answer one of the most commonly asked questions about the Diátaxis documentation framework - what is the difference between a how-to and a tutorial?”

Episode 21 lists as 19 July 2024, which is outside of our current week, or am I missing something (I suspect not).

I don’t see how we can include things we missed in prior issues like that, though naturally I normally look for ways to include it (listed or references; ie. if something gets written/blogged about it, within the current week
it maybe ‘useful’ listed underneath (within issue) for reference etc).

Anyway; we’ve attached it [here] underneath our current issue now (in discussion), even if it doesn’t end up being added to the wiki issue officially

It’ll be a few hours before Billy gets to see this, this is just my current thinking
 and not any decision.

Right, I see! Of course, it makes sense if you’re only including news from the current week and not (like in this case) highlights to stuff one might have missed. We don’t yet have a recording for last friday’s ODH, unless our official video editor (@degville :film_projector: ) can make it on time?

Thanks for the reminder @gzanchi. It’s almost ready to go - I just need to add the chapter links. I’ll try to finish this within a couple of hours.

And this is the abstract: “In this recording, we discuss various strategies for helping software engineers write, and take ownership over, more documentation.”

gzanchi -
Muchly appreciated your continued zeal and interes in how UWN is produced.

In this insance:
