Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS released

Paride Legovini reports the release of Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS for Desktop, Server, and Cloud, as well as flavours. We’re reminded what a point-release is, given a reminder of support duration, and links for more details or to download. Oracular Oriole (to be 24.10) now in Kernel Feature Freeze

In the advancement toward release, Timo Aaltonen (tjaalton) advises that the Kernel Feature Freeze for Oracular Oriole is now in place. All new features are in oracular-proposed, “and from now on we will focus on fixing bugs”.

UbuCon North America 2025 Status Update

Ian Weisser provides us with a Status Update for UbuCon North America 2025. We’re told the planning committee is working on the event which will be late July 2025 in Wisconsin, and volunteers are being sought. Volunteers are also sought for other event(s) on the sidelines to other major events; “This is a vision for a new planning committee”. Other details are provided; and we are told we can join the discussions; the weekly meeting time is provided.

LXD: Weekly news - 362

“Summarizing a week full of complex bugfixes and exciting new features. From fixing races during a cluster recovery process to reworking firmware detection for VMs. The introduction of many shell completion features, support for creating many different resources from YAML strings and newly introduced API metrics as a part of a Disaster Recovery Framework for MicroCloud were some of the main changes introduced this past week. Once again featuring some contributions cherry picked from Incus. Thanks to all the contributors!”

UbuCon Asia 2024: My first ever conference!

‘soumyadghosh’ gives a enthusiastic synopsis of his experiences in the 2 day event. Soumya thanks the many who made the trip possible and to all who participated in setting up and conducting the event. Screenshots of several of them are provided. He also gives mention of the notable personalities he was introduced to in the course of the event, focusing on snaps. The event “ended very well … a thrilling and lovely experience, that I’d always cherish”.

Ubuntu Desktop’s 24.10 Dev Cycle - Part 5: Introducing Permissions Prompting

Oliver Smith gives us another update on Ubuntu Desktop 24.10’s development achievements, this update concentrating on a “experimental new feature landing”. We’re told about the new permissions prompting feature which will benefit “privacy and security conscious users”. We’re told this is a “significant step forward in application security”, and shown what it looks like using GIF & images, as well as how it works. Details on trying it with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS are provided, and how feedback is sought.

Dealing with spam on Matrix

Merlijn Sebrechts has added a documentation page on Matrix use relating to spam. The document suggests users not engage with spammers, and disable image previews so users aren’t seeing ‘disturbing’ images before moderators and bots can remove them. Also covered: ignoring invites, contacting Ubuntu Matrix Operators, or Matrix admins.
