Advisory: Spam invite incident (2024-09-13)

Details

On September 13, 2024, spammers on the Matrix network began inviting users in Ubuntu-related rooms to a room containing illegal content. As of September 16, 2024, this incident is still ongoing.

Suggested actions for affected users

  • Record the MXID of the user inviting you to the room (it will look like @user:example.com) and report it in the #matrix-ops:ubuntu.com channel.
  • Reject the invite. If you can, set the user to be ignored also. (Element has a button, “Reject and ignore user”, which you should see in the room invite notification on Element Desktop. Similar functionality should exist in your Matrix client, you may have to use /ignore @user:example.com for this.)
  • Consider enabling automatic ignoring of known spammers. See Blocking invites of banned users for details.
  • See Dealing with spam on Matrix | Ubuntu for more steps you can take to best combat spam.

Actions taken by Ubuntu Matrix Operators

  • All known accounts used by the spammers have been banned from the Ubuntu Community.
  • A homeserver being used for abuse has been identified and blocked from the Ubuntu Community.
  • Additional tools to reduce the impact of similar incidents in the future is being investigated.

Thank you to the Matrix Council for keeping the ubuntu rooms safe from this kind of activity. Much appreciated.
