Julian Andres Klode provides a ā€œheads upā€ to Ubuntu developers that the rust-coreutils transition is landing in the ā€˜release pocket’. Julian lists why this is ā€œparticularly interestingā€, gives a list of changes, and provides a link to the merge request.

Call for Nominations: Ubuntu Communications Council

Wild_Man, on behalf of the Ubuntu Communications Council, tells us that all seven seats will need to be filled, and asks for nominations. We’re told the term is two years, given details of the requirements, told what the Communications Council does, and the responsibilities of Council members. The timelines for nomination and voting are provided, along with details if we’d like to apply.

Jon Seager writes about ā€˜Immutable Linux distributions’, giving a brief history, before moving to Ubuntu Core. We’re told what an immutable system is, its benefits and more, before moving to the paradox such systems include. A number of alternative approaches are discussed (ostree, bootc, nixos) before covering how Ubuntu Core does it. A final summary of the four alternative ways of achieving a system is finally given.

Open-Source NVIDIA Linux Driver Usage About To Become Much More Reliable

Michael Larabel informs us that the NVIDIA ā€œNouveauā€ open-source driver should become more stable with fixes coming in the Linux 6.17 kernel. We’re given a short history, and told of the ā€œstellar work of Faith Ekstrand and David Airlieā€ that address the problems. Michael gives a link to the patch, a quote, and more. The patch should make the Linux 6.17-rc5 release.

GNOME 49 Restores Ability to Launch X11 Desktop Sessions

Joey Sneddon writes that the GNOME Project may still include X11 support for GNOME 49. We’re given a quick ā€˜recap’ and told some of that change has now been ā€˜undone’. Joey gives us details and quotes, including from GDM maintainer Adrian Vovk, and he tells us this should include Ubuntu 25.10. We’re reminded this is a ā€œtemporary reprieveā€ with the changes expected now in GNOME 50.

Miracle-WM 0.7 Brings Mouse/Keyboard Configuration, Enhances Sway IPC Compatibility

Four Months Have Passed Since The Last AMDVLK Driver Release

Michael Larabel reminds us of AMD’s prior announcements with regard to AMD’s Mesa Vulkan Support (RADV), and OpenGL and Vulkan drivers would no longer be included in regards to Radeon. Michael notes here that ā€œGitHub activity has also dried upā€, with the last release back on 30 April, and more. In Michael’s conclusion he comments ā€œit looks safe to say now that AMD is placing all their cards with RADV for Linux useā€.
