From local to global! I was recently in Kathmandu, a beautiful city in Nepal, which always feels like home to me.
I was there to attend and organise UbuCon Asia 2025. Last year, I had the pleasure of organising UbuCon Asia in Jaipur as the lead of the local team, and this time, I was there as a part of the global team.
The event was jointly organised by UbuCon Asia Committee, GNOME Nepal and Ubuntu Nepal. The local team was led by @younggunner14 and co-led by @saileshsingh36 , both of whom I consider my brothers, so it was amazing to meet them again after GNOME Asia 2024 in India.
This was a very large event, with registrations breaking our earlier estimates, with 400+ registrations, the venue was packed with intellect, ideas and energy.
August 29 (Pre Event)
I first went to the venue on Aug 29 to connect with the local team and @jipangmenjerit from the global team. It was amazing to see the energy everybody had and the stress to do everything properly.
After eating some nice food, exchanging jokes, and interacting with the team, I went back to the hotel.
August 30 (Event Day 1)
The first morning was stressful, with attendees excited to get their badges and organisers running around to facilitate that.
I volunteered to get the speakers to the back room, where they can connect with their fellow speakers and prepare the slides. It was a great moment to meet many of them, such as @dimple-kuriakose , @avgomes, @kappuccino111, @till-kamppeter and many others
The event started with the opening ceremony, followed by a great keynote session by @dimple-kuriakose on Confidential Computing.
After the keynote, I went to the Ubuntu booth. I was glad to see one of my seniors there, who now works at Canonical. @ilvipero (as always, was full of energy), @avgomes and Graham. They made the booth really special with chocolates, lots of stickers and forms ![]()
Proceeding from that, I went to the booth areas on the Ground floor where the Ubu4Cut booth and Deepcomputing booths were jam-packed.
@choo121600 did a spectacular job with the Ubu4Cut booth, and we certainly now need it at all events. Thanks for all the pictures and keeping them safe haha
After lunch, @sukso96100 hosted the BoF - “Ubuntu LoCo Council & LoCo Leaders BoF”. It was a great session where he invited me on stage impromptu. It was neither something I thought of or prepared for. Nonetheless, once your name is called, you have to haha.
In the end, it was great, sharing about last year’s UbuCon and the Ubuntu release party, the first of its kind organised in India.
I then had my own panel discussion on “Growing Ubuntu and FOSS Community - and yourself,
Locally and Globally”. @yushpokharel12 did an amazing job in hosting it. It was again nice to share about our work and what people could do.
After the conference ended on day 1, we had a great meeting on areas of improvement with the local team. These are always a bit tense, but we all shared ideas and what we did in past events.
I was seriously amazed after seeing all our pointers executed on Day 2, making the event run so smoothly. Hats off to the whole team!
August 31st (Event Day 2)
For day 2, I had to reach early at 8:00 A.M. I am not an early morning person, but duty calls ![]()
I was used as a model to pose with some sponsor drinks and perform a demo registration by @rabinakarki . It was fun to say the least.
I then had to resume my duty of transporting speakers to the backstage for smoother session changes.
Youngbin also lent his cameras and microphones to the local team for interview recording. I believe we did more than just that by taking selfies, recording fun videos and more.
It was so hard for me to escape from giving food reviews on camera, but I won ![]()
We then had a BoF on “Next UbuCon Asia in your City…?” by @sukso96100 and @jipangmenjerit , and just to let you know, bids are open, so if you want to bring this experience to your city, don’t wait, we are already past the deadline!
Then we get to the closing remarks, as speakers were given an amazing amazing momento by the local team.
After which we were asked to give awards to the sponsors, where I had the pleasure to give it to Deepcomputing representatives and Logpoint speakers.
After closing, we had a great group photo, a cake-cutting ceremony with speakers, organisers and volunteers, followed by a great dinner sponsored by Programiz.
Day 2 was insanely packed with so much!
September 1 (Day 3)
This day we had a day trip, due to some urgent work calls and requirements I had to abandon my plans for the day to resume work from the hotel. But the day didn’t become a waste. We had a great GNOME Nepal meet with @younggunner14 , @saileshsingh36 @jipangmenjerit , and @fenris followed by some good food and lengthy talks. We also recorded some videos which I want to share so much, but for my safety, I can’t xD If you know, you know ![]()
The event was an amazing representation of the Ubuntu ideals, with people coming together and working hand in hand.
Huge thanks to the local team @younggunner14 @saileshsingh36 @yushpokharel12 @rupesh-nepal @rabinakarki @utsavdotdev and the global team @fenris @jipangmenjerit @rjhsiao @sukso96100 and many more people who gave it their all for the event to be what it became.
Looking forward to more UbuCon Asia, bringing the community together.
