March 8, Women’s Day - Marzo 8, Día Internacional de la Mujer - Bogotá, Colombia

Lina Elizabeth writes that she was invited to be the ICANN Universal Acceptance Day closing speaker, with the talk on March 8 on International Women’s Day. We’re given some facts that were presented in that talk, which show how women are under-represented in many fields, including tech. Lina also gives some recommendations for men in facilitating a more ‘women friendly environment’. Lina also gives thanks to Alejandra Zerdá, with this post given in English and Spanish.

Ubuntu Studio: Wallpaper Competition Winners 24.04 LTS

The Ubuntu Studio team reminds us that Ubuntu Studio 24.04 LTS will be the eighth long term support release and the 32nd release overall. We’re told of the high quality entries, before the post moves to the default wallpaper created by Eylul Dogruel that will be “rotated-out for the next four releases”. Next we’re shown the ‘winners’ which include the title & creators, with these images already viewable on dailies.

Kubuntu Wallpaper 24.04 – Call for Submissions

The Kubuntu team is calling out for submissions for the official Kubuntu 24.04 desktop wallpaper. We are told what they’re looking for, and given submission guidelines. Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2024.

GNOME 46: The Best New Features

Joey Sneddon tells us that GNOME 46 was released on March 20, 2024, and will be the ‘centerpiece’ of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Desktop. We’re told of some of what is included, along with showing some JPG & GIFs, and of app improvements. We’re advised where we can test it out which includes it appearing soon on Ubuntu 24.04 dailies.

XWayland Nukes The NVIDIA EGLStream Backend

Michael Larabel reminds us that “XWayland had targeted both the Generic Buffer Management (GBM) and EGLStream APIs due to NVIDIA not supporting GBM”. Because NVIDIA now has GBM support, XWayland is removing the “EGLStream mess”. A link is given to Red Hat’s Olivier Fourdan’s merge request that causes the removal of about 1.5k lines of code.

GNOME 45.5 Is Here with Small Updates for GNOME Shell, Mutter, and GNOME Tweaks

Marius Nestor writes about the release of the GNOME 45.5 by the GNOME Project. We’re given details of the many fixes included, and are reminded to upgrade our systems if using GNOME 45. Mention of GNOME 44.10 or the final release of that system is also provided.

NVIDIA 550.67 Linux Graphics Driver Brings Wayland Fixes, Better Support for VKD3D Games

Marius Nestor blogs about the NVIDIA 550.67 release by NVIDIA. This release will fix hanging issues with some wgpu apps when used with Wayland that can impact some game players, plus some other issues. Links to the release notes are given, and where we can download it.

Wayland Protocols 1.34 Introduces Better Drag & Drop, Explicit DRM Sync Objects
