Ubuntu Desktop 25.10 - The Questing Quokka Roadmap

Jean Baptiste Lallement shares the “horizon for Ubuntu Desktop” for Ubuntu 25.10, reminding us its the final interim release before Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. We’re given details of where the development effort will be spent, which includes the Desktop Experience, TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption, and much more. Some of the key dates in this cycle are given, and links to the Release Schedule should we need more. We’re reminded more will be shared as the cycle progresses.

Ubuntu Member Email Perk Update

Aaron Prisk announces a change to the Ubuntu email address alias. We’re told the new mail forwarding service will fix an existing issue, and will take effect on June 2, 2025, thus users should action this change before that date. Details are provided on what is required; we’re reminded the Ubuntu email address is a perk of Ubuntu membership, with a link provided to learn more if we’re new to what this means.

Intel Releases Updated CPU Microcode Due To “Training Solo”

Michael Larabel writes about Intel’s new CPU microcode that mitigates “Training Solo” fixes. We’re told the Linux kernel mitigations were merged only “minutes” after the embargo lift. This microcode update strengthens the mitigation; details of the related SA (Security Advisory) notices are discussed. A link to the Intel GitHub repository is also provided.

Canonical Provides Status Update For Snapdragon X Elite Laptops On Ubuntu 25.04

Michael Larabel tells us about Canonical’s update on running Ubuntu 25.04 on Snapdragon X Elite laptops. Before installing Ubuntu we are reminded to update all machine firmware on Microsoft Windows 11. Some instruction is given for specific hardware, and we’re told of installations and the recommended dual boot approach. Ubuntu 25.10 to Include New Image Viewer, Terminal Apps

Joey Sneddon reports the work on ‘Questing Quokka’ , Ubuntu 25.10, is underway, and here concentrates on Loupe replacing Eye of GNOME, and Ptyxis replacing GNOME Terminal. We’re told that final decisions aren’t made as to defaults, but they’re both expected to ship with the release. Joey covers the two apps, including screenshots, and how we can use them now if using Ubuntu 24.10 and later.
