Ubuntu Member Email Perk Update

:star: We’re pushing back the switchover until June 12th to give members a bit more time to get their account setup.

Hello all,
We are very excited to announce that Ubuntu Members are about to have one of their perks upgraded. Up to this point, Members have long been awarded an @ubuntu.com email alias. However, due to more strict mail security features being employed by email providers, messages were often getting incorrectly flagged as spam.

For the past few months, we’ve had a small group of members test out a new mail forwarding service that not only aimed to fix this issue, but to also allow members to send emails via their ubuntu.com address. We’re also excited to announce this change will be coming June 12th. To ensure uninterrupted delivery of e-mails to your Ubuntu e-mails, please take action before June 12th.

Next steps for Ubuntu Members

To take advantage of this new perk, members will need to set up their ForwardMail account by following these steps:

  1. Log into ForwardMail using your UbuntuOne SSO account. Under Quick Links beside the ubuntu.com domain, select Aliases.

  1. Click Edit under Quick links and enter your personal email under Forwarding Recipients.

  1. If you plan on sending emails via your ubuntu.com address, under Quick Links select Generate Password to create a unique password. You will use this when configuring your SMTP services on your mail application of choice.

5

  1. Once you have your SMTP password, you can click on the Setup Instructions link to learn how to configure mail sending on various desktop and mobile mail applications.

6

For current/former Canonical employees with legacy aliases

For individuals who were given custom email aliases or firstname.lastname@ubuntu.com aliases as part of their employment at Canonical, aliases will be grandfathered. However, these aliases will continue to function for incoming e-mails only.

To take advantage of the full send and receive functionality of ForwardMail, individuals can apply for Ubuntu Membership.

Feedback and support

If you experience any problems or want to provide feedback on this new perk, please send an email to community@canonical.com.

Done, and seems to be working fine!

Is that ubuntu.com email address used by Launchpad or any other Canonical service? Do I miss anything else if I don’t set up that forwardemail.net account?

Done configuring for domains ubuntu.com & kubuntu.org … so far working fine using the SMTP with Gmail.

Thanks Canonical for the upgrade, hope there are no more issues coming in the future …

I think that no, email is not used to send information from canonical, launchpad or related if you didn’t set that as your email.
So it’s fine to forget about this if you never changed your email to the external/personal one that you initial set (@gmail, @hotmal, whatever)

Does this new change affect the method above? Thanks!

I just changed the smtp server of forwardemail and continue to use my old imap server. Seems fine now.

They will be a bit different going forward. In ForwardMail, next to your configured alias, you should see a Setup Instructions link that will give you the your SMTP settings and steps for various email clients.

Yes, the new way is easier, I switched to the new method, thanks!

I don’t think it is used by any automation, but I don’t think it would be a stretch for someone to try and reach you on that email? You might want to check your archives to see if you’ve ever received email under that alias, which was automatically configured for you when you became Ubuntu Member.

My alias is different in the new system and there is no way for me to edit it

Could you please send me a message (community@canonical.com) with your correct alias and any screenshots that you may have? We’ll see if we can help get things fixed up on our end.

Done.
Very easy flow… Amazing work.

Thanks, email sent! Let me know if i should do anything else

Looks like a nice idea. Spamcop seems to be having a spot of bother adjusting to the new setup, I might wait a few days until the switchover is complete before moving to full troubleshooting mode.
