Youngbin Han has posted the Minutes for the UbuCon Asia 2023 meeting of 4 June 2023. With a link to the youtube recording, a list of meeting participants is provided, along with an Agenda and Discussion items. The date/time of the next meeting is also given.

Ubucon Latin America 2023 Announcement and Call For Papers

Naudy Villarroel Urquiola announces UbuConLA 2023 will take place at Medellin Colombia on 28-29 September 2023. Along with more specifics on the location, we’re given links for more information.

Announcing the Multipass 1.12.0 release

Christopher Townsend tells us about the new Multipass 1.12.0 release. We’re reminded this is the last release that will support the hyperkit driver on MacOS. We are also given some details for upgrading if we’re using MacOS, and given highlights of the release. Christopher notes several bug fixes, and provides links for more information and how to file issues or report problems and feature requests too.

Ubuntu Summit 2023 – Call for Proposals

Aaron Prisk asks us a number of questions, where we’re told if we answered yes to any then Ubuntu Summit 2023 is for us. This post gives us some details of Ubuntu Summit 2023, including registering for the Conference & most importantly submitting a talk abstract. If we’re wanting to submit a talk the details & requirements are provided, including the submission deadline which is 2 July 2023.

Meet Canonical at SmartNICs Summit 2023

Felicia Jia starts by telling us what SmartNICs are, and how they can save enterprise data centre costs. We’re told of Panel discussions at the SmartNICs Summit in San Jose California on 13-15 June 2023, advised of the two tracks to be presented by Canonical, and who’ll be there. We are invited to attend & speak with Canonical staff (table 16) during the entire event on 13-15 June.

GNOME Shell 44.2 Improves Built-In Screen Recorder, Bluetooth Menu, and More

Marius Nestor reminds us of the recent release of GNOME 44.2 desktop, with the GNOME Project also releasing updates for some GNOME components: including Mutter 44.2, and GNOME Shell 44.2. We’re told what these updates will improve which include fixing a memory leak and some other bugs.

Steam On Linux Tries Again For Video Hardware Acceleration By Default On NVIDIA GPUs

Michael Larabel reminds us Steam recently enabled NVIDIA GPU hardware acceleration by default, which alas ran into problems. We’re now told these have been fixed with this beta release. We’re giving some details of this release, with a link if we want to read the official Steam Communities announcement.

Ubuntu 23.10 Adds Support for Window Quarter Tiling

Joey Sneddon writes about the Ubuntu Tiling Assistant extension which is rolling out to Ubuntu 23.10 daily builds and is expected to be included by default. Joey outlines what this extension will provide for us if we’re using Ubuntu 23.10, including a GIF and screenshot to help us understand. He tells us we don’t have to wait but can add it now, especially if we’re using Ubuntu 23.04.

KDE Frameworks 5.107 Enables Thumbnail Caching on Encrypted Volumes

Marius Nestor reports on the improvements, added supports, and the minor bug fixes in this monthly update to the KDE Frameworks 5 software suite. A link is provided to full changelog for greater details and we are advised the updates will be available soon in our software repository.

Will Flatpak and Snap replace desktop Linux native apps?

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, in expressing his opinion in respect to containerization, reminds us of the early days of installing software which was replaced by package managers. We’re reminded of the costs with this, which led to the newer containerized package systems and their benefits, and even costs. Next in this ‘story’ is the joining of GNOME and KDE Foundations in creating a joint store above Flatpak. After some discussion we’re given a conclusion that “the future of the Linux desktop is here, and it’s going to be containerized”.

Debian 12 “bookworm” released

This post from our related Debian family reports the release of Debian 12 “bookworm” as stable. In briefly telling us of the nearly 1 year 10 months of development, we are given many details, including supported architectures (which includes i386).
