Problem Description:
Relevant System Information:
Qubes requires the OS be finished installing before I can use sys-net in the Qubes OS to create an internet connection.
I have installed Ubuntu all by its lonesome on a LenovoT480 with no problems, well takes awhile.
I either need Ubuntu ISO that installs without internet connection needed. Or how to work around whatever is keeping the latest Qube requiring Internet connection.
My clarification, but it adds un needed verbiage and confusion. but the clarification may come up in my follow up Needs/questions.
Qubes OS, as its website says, “A reasonably secure Operating System,” Qubes OS is a free and open-source, security-oriented operating system for single-user desktop computing. Qubes OS leverages [ Xen-based virtualization] Xen_Project_Software_Overview) to allow for the creation and management of isolated compartments called [qubes.
With Qubes , the Xen Hypervisor is recommended to be installed bare metal, as the only OS on the drive. Under the Xen Hypervisor, one can install different operating systems, which can run, and after they might have (how would one know?) can be deleted, and another clean copy of the target Operating System can be directly restarted with a Template of that OS. Qubes comes with several pre-created, installed templates. Fedora, Whonix, Debian. These have usually been trimmed down, for security and not over running memory. Each Qube can be, upon user choice, have different hardware devices used by that one Qube, camera, USB, Internet. Or have those turned off to the one Qube. The connection to the internet is shared by all the Qubes through a Qube, sys-net. sys-net is not DHCP. and requires manual connection. To create an internet connection with a Qube, requires the Operating System, WiFI - IPV4 settings be manual, by entering IP address, mask, and the usual detail, which is provided information in the page for the one Qube I installed an OS to. But, that internet connection settings are not available until the Operating System, in this case Ubuntu, is fully installed. Qubes uses hardware virtualization to enhance security. Are containers the same. Well, I understand containers are software implemented, and offer some more enhancements to security inside the OS, installed into one of the Qube. Whether using Containers in a standard OS is equal to, or superior to Qubes is beyond my knowledge/experience set.
The download page that first comes up, the first download option never said which flavor.
Qubes forum would say that my attempt to install a qube for Ubuntu. is not a Qubes problem. The interface required is provided in Qubes Documentation, and begins with this is an advanced topic. Meaning someone knowledgeable might answer questions about issues related to the topic. but not a priority.
Perhaps think of the Qubes OS as a tool kit. A skeleton of what can be done. Qubes developers let those whose Operating System is installed – support their own OS. Which is wise. The developers focus on keeping the part they do, secure. I think they are right. FYI. some ordinary users on the Qubes forum are advocating that Firefox should not be the standard browser for the OS’s installed. Qubes Developers, and I am guessing here, don’t involve themselves by changing third party software inside the individual OS’s in the Qubes. Once again Fedora, Debian install with Firefox. and it is said that one should be cautious about not creating an unusual browser fingerprint. Like it said, Qubes is like a tool-kit.
But using Qubes has a huge learning curve for a Windows Refugee. or Someone who is trying to be secure while living behind the lines. Like a businessman who travels to other countries to make bids on contracts, securely communicate with his own office, while using Internet from hotels, airports, restaurants. and his customers. and then there are Journalists, who are now dying at a high rate.
Anyway, that is the perspective to going to a lot of trouble to use Qubes.
Ubuntu brings a lot of Apps, which are useful, difficult to install in the current Qubes OS provided OS’s. that is -difficult to a non-technical person to install. Time consuming as well.
I can use Ubuntu to acquire information online, transfer that information to another, offline qube for reading, decryptiong, perusal. The first online Qube can be deleted, and all its potential malware gone, then in the second offline Qube prepare an answer, which can be transferred back to a third online Qube. to send out.
and then is the fact, Ubuntu has a strong forum, documentation of how to solve problems.
Like I started more un needed verbiage to the problem of installing Ubuntu.
In latest Mint Linux install, one can choose the option - install third party software, if not internet it skips over the option, but when one is online, it automatically picks up and offers to install third party software the user desires. Which is what I thought should happen with the latest Ubuntu. My bad.
rubio1200 provided the workaround I will try next. Start the install, do not choose to install third party software option, leave it running all night. but everyone made good observations.
perhaps I should start Ubuntu 24 in the live mode, put set it to work online before I attempt install.
How will I easily enable third party software after it is installed? I will look that up, likely well documented.
Okay, so looks you are trying to install Ubuntu into a VM.
The hypervisor seems to be Qubes OS.
Please present us the actual error during install that you are encountering.
Don’t describe it. Show us actual output. Use your phone to show us the screen. Give us something to work with beyond “it failed.” More detail about the actual error is better.
Thank you for your reading and pointing the proper way to document a problem.
Sorry for the delay, I had to see several doctors in the last several days.
I started all over to install Ubuntu into a freshly created -new- qube.
I changed what I did by first starting Ubuntu Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS as a live version of Ubuntu.
I entered the codes to create an internet connection between the Qubes sys-net (sys-net common internet provider to all the different Qubes, as individually allowed by mouse/user control to each Qube.) to the Qube where I was working. Allowed the connection to occur. Yes, the connection to the Live version of Ubuntu is working.
I started the install - First thing, it stopped and the live Ubuntu said it wanted to download and add an updated Installer. so After that. I again started the install. I avoided choosing the options like install third party software, and download/install media codecs, thinking the install process would turn off internet connection.
Install Finished. I did not choose to add Ubuntu Pro. The Ubuntu Install, Seems to work as one would expect Ubuntu should. I added Flatpak installer. created connection to Flathub website, and put in FlatPaks for “Librewolf Browser” and “Mullvad Browser.” One of those had a flash on the screen about Container would not start. But browser appeared.
To be technically accurate. The hypervisor is “Xen” and the Operating System that incorporates it is the Qubes OS. But you are close enough. Edit: As the word Qube is also used to describe the container for the Virtual Machine which Ubuntu is in.
Now I will spend some time reading on the next issue I need to resolve, how to do.
That is I want to modify the Grub in this particular Qube with Ubuntu to also start “Easy OS,”
I will start another thread when I have made some more failures in how to accomplish starting Easy OS in the Qube instead of Ubuntu.
