Problem with Thunderbird and Google

I am running with ubuntu 24.04

Every time I login thunderbird I am gifted with a “sign with google” request. I have been trying to figure out what is going on in google. Seems that there is a mozilla thunderbird as well. It tells me that If I get rid of the “sign in with google” thing it will also delete all my gmail (I think that what it means). I am wondering if anybody knows anything about this one.

Thank you…!–

I’m only going to address the reason why you’re being asked for your Google password.

This is more than likely happening because when you initially setup your Gmail account within Thunderbird you unchecked the box Remember Password and therefore every time you open Thunderbird you’ll be prompted to enter your Google Account(Gmail) password in order to retrieve your email.

If you wish to use Thunderbird to manage your Gmail account without entering your Google password every time the simplest way for you would be to delete your Gmail account from Thunderbird and then re-add it and this time make sure the box next to Remember Password is checked. You will now no longer be prompted to enter your Google password.

Or you can simply bypass Thunderbird and log directly into Gmail through your browser and stay signed in though this is not ideal from a security standpoint.

This is a complete confusion for me. First is Thunderbird really Mozilla Thunderbird? I also don’t understand “my Gmail account from Thunderbird” I would be delighted to delete it if I knew what and where it was. When I goto bitwarden, press “Thunderbird” it comes right up and its already logged in. Makes no difference, i get asked two at a time, to “sign into google” - I just delete them although they come back, and back, and back.

Thank you for the Reply!!

This one keeps me up at night. I cannot figure it out! I do use gmail because I thought I had to do that when I setup Thunderbird. I then put all the info into bitwarden. When I turn on thunderbird bitwarden sends all the info and I am logged in automatically. Then the request for me logging in again and again. it makes no sense to me. The only thing I can figure out to fix it is to either get rid of thunderbird or move on to another mail program. I do appreciate your thought. I am currently thinking of just removing thunderbird and moving on. I would appreciate your thoughts on my mess.

I think my main problem is that I get used to programs and hate to change. This time I think I have no choice.

Thank you for your reply!!

Hi, @drufus2002

Yes, “Thunderbird” is the same thing as “Mozilla Thunderbird” (the e-mail client).

You say that when you “turn on thunderbird bitwarden sends all the info and I am logged in automatically. Then the request for me logging in again and again.”. Well, I don’t know how Bitwarden works in that regard, but Gmail requires OAuth to work, since 30-May-2022 . The following article in the Thunderbird support web site explains how you can setup Gmail in Thunderbird:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail

I suggest that you read, in particular, the “Updating a Gmail account to use OAuth” section of that support web page.

I hope this helps

Open Thunderbird and then look in Edit → Account Settings
That will show you you the email accounts you currently have set in the programme and how you originally named your email accounts when you first used Thunderbird.

You have not yet said what email provider you use but like Norm24, I suspect you either now use or have in the past used Gmail even if you don’t do so any more.

Tell us who your current email provider is and we may be able to help further.
We don’t need you full email address but the part after the @ in your current address should help.
If it is @gmail then you are using gmail and will have to sign in to google to retrieve your messages. This can be setup to happen automatically when Thunderbird is opened.
If gmail is listed but you don’t use it you should be able to delete it from here.

If it is @otherprovider then you should not need to sign into google.

So please help us help you by telling us as much detail as possible.

I do not use bitwarden so can’t help in any way with that but it appears from a quick search that you have to use a web-browser extension and somehow link that into thunderbird.

Doing what ricmarques suggests may help but again it doesn’t seem to help with your loging in problem or with bitwarden.

My problem is logging into wherever. I goto google, ubuntu, use firefox and I use bitwarden to store all my passwords, etc.

Its taken me a while but I think I know what is going on. EVERYBODY now stores passwords so one need not put them in again. So, for instance, when I goto thunderbird bitwarden automatically puts in my name, email, password and I am logged in. Google doesn’t know that because they assume I am not logged in. Therefore Google asks me to “Sign in with Google” (time after time) The same thing happens when I log into ubuntu discourse. When that happens sometimes bitwarden steps in, sometimes ubuntu.com steps in, etc. On top of that we have firefox stepping in as well and they too are inserting the passwords it has saved for me (EVERYBODY is now saving passwords to help me!).

One of my problems, is that, in Thunderbird, I am using both my gmail and my yahoo mail. Should I remove my gmail in thunderbird and what happens then (I can still get gmail but not sure)

My problem is to figure out, exactly, what to do. I know, its all my fault (true). I have to figure out how to fix it. I use gmail and I use yahoo.email - both (for really no good reason but that’s the way it is. I know I need a single place to keep my passwords and that is bitwarden. The rest, not so much. Seems easy but its not. For instance, if I stop google by getting them to stop storing passwords then they will, apparently, also remove my email account at google. Anyway, this is the way it is. I am kinda amazed I seem to be alone with this one.

Thoughts?

I have now removed gmail from my thunderbird program. Waiting to see what is next.

This worked! FINALLY FIXED!
DONE!!
