I just saw this in Edubuntu:
If I’m grokking this correctly (@eeickmeyer please chime in if I’m mistaken), there are a variety of Desktop Entries with their own Category value that ultimately serve as links to community resources. I’m thinking this would be a nice addition to default-settings as it would provide a much easier way for people to reach us rather than first having go to our Links page on the website.
What do you think?
Yep! Ubuntu Studio has been doing this since well before I was involved. You can see similar in ubuntustudio-menu.
…although if we’re not shipping a Matrix solution, having Matrix links might not be super ideal. Of course that’s a bit of a contentious issue, even with the canonical (yes, lowercase, at least ignoring @popey’s comments there) client:
Probably not Telegram links, either. At least for that one, we could probably do a check for a Telegram client and then conditionally offer to install one before launching.
That could work for Matrix, too, but if people are like me, they just use Element Web (I’ve found on resource constrained machines Element Desktop, like most Electron apps, is a non-starter), and it’s a little more difficult to check for that. Perhaps we check for whether or not the link handler’s been set? Even still, people can use Element Web and not install the handler.
Nonsense. The matrix.to links give people a web client via Element Web.
