Will Ubuntu Forum's 'Other OS Support and Projects' come here?

There was a reference to the Ubuntu Forum’s section ‘Other OS Support and Projects’ on Ask Ubuntu the other day.

I am directing that user here to see if there were any plans to add a similar area to Ubuntu Community Hub on Discourse…

Plus I am a little curious myself as I can always provide a little support for any Slacware questions.

I don’t know what the official policy is here but I have seen some recent topics where the OP was instructed to seek help on the relevant forum for the OS they were asking about.

Personally, I frequented the Other OS Support and Projects section on a regular basis to see if there was anything I could do to help.

Would it be appropriate to have a sub-section like that here?

I honestly don’t know and that would be something the admins and mods would have to decide I suppose.

I would personally welcome such an inclusion. However I am aware that with the migration this is an excellent time to migrate only what is useful and to discard anything that has been of lesser use on the Forums…

Hi Andrew, no we are not going to bring them here, that section was pretty much dead we did not have volunteers that were familiar with other operating systems so we are only providing support for the Official Flavors of Ubuntu.

Current policy refers to Ubuntu Desktop/Server and official flavors which get mentioned at Welcome To Support And Help

There are a few specific exceptions for rather specific questions; for example the LXD support area allows support questions for non-Ubuntu questions, but those are specific & not general support questions.

This is how I see it anyway; however things can always change (in time).

As I see it, it’s best that we don’t spread ourselves too thin, but focus on what we do best. Also, many of the other OSes based on Ubuntu have things that they do differently, and these things are likely to trip us up when we are trying to help.

There is no policy against other distros, non-Ubuntu respins, other OS, etc.
It’s never been “Ubuntu Only.”

There is also no policy against truthful and helpful advice to a misdirected person.
So currently…

Your question is welcome. However, our bench of Pop!OS experts is limited, so please understand a delayed response. You might also consider their great help venue at…

…but that can change over time, as the interests of contributors wax and wane.

For the initial setup of the new Support and Help category, we decided not to replicate the entire structure of UbuntuForums, but only the busiest sections. We wanted to keep structure and choices simple and familiar during the transition.

As different types of questions and answers (including non-Ubuntu) become common, the structure can be easily changed. The current Staff consensus is to wait until a pattern of change emerges instead of trying to predict the future.

Opinion: The entire Ubuntu Project benefits from closer relationships with sometimes-estranged upstream and downstream family (Debian, Mint, Pop!, etc). More changes and bugs upstreamed, better support, less duplication of effort. We have a platform and policies favorable to a welcoming environment.
