Ubuntu Studio 22.10 Has Reached End-Of-Life (EOL)

We’re reminded that Ubuntu 22.10, including all flavors such as Ubuntu Studio, reached end-of-life (EOL) on 20 July 2023. We’re told what this means, and provided a link for Ubuntu Studio 22.10 users who haven’t already upgraded to 23.04.

Mir Release 2.14.0

Alan Griffiths reports the release of Mir 2.14.0. We’re told this “brings support for Wayland screenlockers”, support for Drag 'n Drop and more. We’re given a list of the enhancements, and told the ABI is now at 26, and given links to the source tarball and Mir PPAs.

LXD 5.16 has been released

Thomas Parrott reports the LXD team has released LXD 5.16. We’re given some details of the new features including how we could take advantage of them (with links for more specific details). This is a detailed post, with links on the new signing key (used for this and future releases of LXD), the full changelog, and a link to download.

The Planet

A declarative approach to Linux networking with Netplan

Lukas Märdian reminds us there are numerous ways of dealing with networking in Linux, before addressing Netplan. We’re given some history of Netplan in Ubuntu, and the use of systemd-networkd in Ubuntu server installs, whilst Desktop installs used NetworkManager. Netplan.io as a “control layer above systemd-networkd or NetworkManager” will unify all Ubuntu system management. This post tells us of the “vision of Linux networking” in Ubuntu, plus future plans for desktop integration.

Mesa Fixes A Large Performance Regression For Systems Using HPET

Michael Larabel writes about the High Precision Event Timer (HPET) and reminds us of recent issues. With some links to remind us of the issue, we’re told where the problem was and given a link too and some details of a merge request made that should resolve the issue.

New Linux Kernel Code Works On APIC “Decrapification”, Suggests Dropping x86 32-bit

Michael Larabel talks about a “major clean-up of the x86 APIC code” or “decrapification” as it’s referred to in the patches, and discussion of “killing of x86 32-bit support”. We’re given some quotes, and links to the 58 patches on the “decrapification” work.

NVIDIA 535.86.05 Linux Driver Fixes Excessive Memory Use, Kernel Panic On Full vRAM

Michael Larabel alerts us to NVIDIA publishing the latest stable release of R535 Linux driver series that fixes various issues. We’re given a list of those ‘fixed issues’ and given a link to NVIDIA where we can download it.

Ubuntu 23.10 Swapping DejaVu for Noto Fonts

Joey Sneddon reminds us current Ubuntu Desktop installs default to the DejaVu fonts for non-latin scripts, but we’re told that Noto fonts are expected to handle this with Ubuntu 23.10 and later. We’re given a quote from Ubuntu’s Gunnar Hjalmarsson that alerts us to the fact that Ubuntu isn’t alone in this change.
