Introducing Kernel 6.5 for the 23.10 Mantic Minotaur Release

Andrea Righi tells us the target kernel for Ubuntu 23.10 is currently Linux 6.5. We’re given dates of freezes from the schedule, and told an experimental build based on 6.5-rc1 is available, and will be updated weekly if we’d like to help test it. We’re reminded it’s currently experimental, and told: of some new features, open issues, plus Ubuntu-specific changes.

Opportunity Open Source

Aaron Prisk asks if we’re “inspired by open source but don’t know where to begin”. We’re told of a new event at IIT Mandi in Mandi India, and given some details of what we can find and take advantage of there, including how to register for the event.

Testing Netplan’s Desktop integration with NetworkManager

Lukas Märdian starts by telling us “Netplan.io is the ‘single source of truth’ in controlling Ubuntu’s network stack”. We’re told what this means, and changes that will be found in Ubuntu 23.10. This post alerts us to the changes, and requests those using Ubuntu mantic to help test the network integration changes. Please note this is a post on an existing thread; many details are provided.

Liam Proven suggests that after 15 years, Wayland may soon “topple X11 as the most common way to get a GUI on Linux”. We’re reminded of some of the earlier articles about Wayland endorsements from various team developers.

Updated NTFS Driver for Linux 6.5 Includes Minor Enhancements and Bug Fixes

Mehedi Hasan tells us of Konstantin Komarov’s modifications to the NTFS driver for the Linux 6.5 kernel. We’re reminded of the work that started with the 5.15 kernel, and told of the enhanced support that will exist with 6.5, with details and a link to the kernel merge request.

Linux Kernel Update Resolves Intel Hybrid CPU Frequency Scaling Issue with Disabled E-Cores

Mehedi Hasan tells us the linux kernel now includes a “fix for Intel hybrid CPU frequency scaling when disabling E-Cores”. We’re told this is an “important fix” and given details, including a quote from Intel’s Linux developer Srinivas Pandruvada, and told of a few other fixes found in the Linux 6.5 kernel.

Linux 6.5 Bringing Sensor Monitoring To Many More Desktop Motherboards

Michael Larabel notes the hardware monitoring “HWMON” subsystem updates that are now in the 6.5 kernel that users will find interesting. We’re given details of the various updates, links for more details, as well as a link to the kernel mailing list if we need more.

GRUB 2.12 RC Delivers Two Years Worth Of Bootloader Improvements

Michael Larabel tells us that Grub 2.12 is the successor to Grub 2.06, and that it has reached release candidate status. We’re briefly told of improvements and given a link to the GNU Git so we can test the RC1 release.

fwupd 1.9.3 Adds Support for More Thunderbolt 4 Docks, TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 13 v3

Marius Nestor tells us of the release of fwupd 1.9.3 system daemon that achieves firmware updates on GNU/Linux distributions. We’re told of some of the new features & devices that will benefit from this release, as well as being given a link to the release notes & where we can download the software ourselves.
