Proposal: GNOME Console as default terminal app

What is doing XTerm and UXTerm in today’s Ubuntu except some historic compatibility when such occurrences should be pruned from this world?

xterm is not in the default Ubuntu Desktop install. You can open a new bug or I guess a new topic if something else is depending on xterm that should not be.

texlive-full is the culprit, for my install at least.

Meh, I’ve never had any issues with the gnome terminal – it works.

Any update on the proposal? Will the next coming plucky release remain terminal or console?

gnome-terminal

There has been some Ubuntu activity around ptyxis but => ?

We are no longer considering GNOME Console to be the default terminal app. It doesn’t have enough customizability and it doesn’t have as much momentum in GNOME.

I like Ptyxis but Jon has suggested we also look at ghostty. It’s too late to make a change here for Ubuntu 25.04 but it’s something we’ll look into later.

For this reason I have set this topic to close as it’s no longer relevant. A new discussion can be started if a move to another terminal app is proposed in the future.
