Marc Gilligan (@ulfnic), Nils Buchner (@nbuechner) , Aaron Rainbolt (@arraybolt3 ), Mauro Gaspari (@ilvipero), Seth Arnold (@sarnold)

Meeting Chair:
Mauro Gaspari (@ilvipero)

Identity validation

  • Pathway for users to confirm account identity for Ubuntu Matrix Council members:
    • Launchpad team link was added to the Governance page, listing all members
    • All members should have their matrix account listed on their Launchpad page
    • Operators should also have similar structure created so they can also be validated easily
  • General account validation questions
    • People should add their matrix account to their Launchpad page

Moderation authority levels

  • Room admins should have authority over their rooms, over defenders. If room admins need help with moderation decisions, they can request it in the Ubuntu Matrix ops channel.
  • Authority levels are documented on the moderation style and vision document that is currently under review by the Ubuntu Matrix Council.

IRC Bridging updates

  • Conversation with libera.chat is progressing. There are a few questions we need to answer this week:

    • How many rooms are we looking to bridge?
      • Initially 20 rooms, we might add a few rooms if requested, up to 50.
      • If there are more than 50 rooms to bridge, we will first reach out to libera.chat
    • Can we setup timeout on the bridge, so that inactive users are removed from rooms?
      • yes, this setting is available on our snapped bridge, and @nbuechner already tested it successfully
    • Do we have identd on our load balancer proxy?
      • We do not currently have it on our load balancer proxy, but IS DevOps team can look into this and see if they can implement it during the next release cycle.
  • Other bridging tasks:

    • the previously portaled rooms :libera.chat are no longer available
    • No further action needed on the IRC side to cleanup. We can directly bridge to our new rooms on the :ubuntu.com homeserver
    • https://libera.chat/guides/matrix# https://matrix.org/blog/2023/11/28/shutting-down-bridge-to-libera-chat/
      • “Today we are sorry to announce that we are not able to bring the Libera Chat bridge back online. We have already begun working through clean up tasks, such as clearing ghosts, and expect to be done by December 22. If you see any bridge artifacts left past that point, please let us know.”

Federation updates

  • Proxy is being tested in staging
  • Full federation will land in production early next week
  • We are planning to add federated banlist only from the community effort channel. Having said that we want to have stakes in the decisions and make sure that good decisions are made especially if entire servers are banned.

Documentation

Other topics

  • Should all spaces be subspaces of the ubuntu space?
    • This should be offered, but not enforced.

Getting Involved

The Matrix Council meets every week. Meetings are not streamed to provide a safe space where council members can tackle difficult topics and issues. Having said that, we believe transparency is extremely important, therefore meeting notes are published on the Ubuntu Discourse after each meeting.
We encourage everyone to get involved. If you want to ask a question, start a discussion, or get involved please reach out to us:

  • On the Ubuntu Discourse. You can either reply to the meeting reports, or to this thread.
  • On the Ubuntu Matrix Ops Channel: #matrix-ops:ubuntu.com
