Hello.
Thanks for reading my topic.
I use Lubuntu since 2020 and for me is being an good distro.
I see good improvements in each Lubuntu release.
Some distros are removing support for X11. However Ubuntu allowing X11.
Linux is known for compatibility with “old” computers thus being an good solution for users migrate for that OS.
I see much changes in Lubuntu for using wayland as default session.
Lubuntu next future versions will allow support for X11 if Canonical continue maintaining support for X11 ?
I and others users not has video cards supporting wayland.
I want Lubuntu devs replying that topic.
Please not remove X11 support for Lubuntu. I see LXQT and QT support X11.
Have an nice day.
“There may be some point at which we go Wayland only, but that will not likely occur until support or interest in X approaches zero.”
In others words if Canonical, LXQT , SDDM and few others components continue supporting X11 the Lubuntu team will allow X11 ?
“That said, what video cards do you think won’t work?”
Thanks for asking about it.
Geforce GT 640 use nvidia driver 470 … has wayland support using EGL, but has problems … not control panel, not is possible see any status about the GPU and not allow commands to control overcloking, underclocking or fan control. Perhaps nouveau driver has wayland support for that video card, but will lose CUDA and NVENC. In moment that video card works better in X11.
Radeon HD 3000 … IGP … much old … use mesa drivers for opengl 3.3. However has enough processing for video 1080P, good browser support and enough opengl performance for few others softwares.
In moment I can’t to do an upgrade. If I lived in USA would upgrade easily because current low end video cards has good low price.
Wayland need less coding time than X11 and so is good for programmers, but not is added wayland support for “old” video cards drivers even if the GPU does more than 1 TFLOP performance.
That makes users worry about the future Linux distro versions forcing to upgrade the video card mainly for users using notebooks.
I not see information if is possible run wayland software under X11. Perhaps an good programmer can create an solution for it.
Well, it’s hard to predict the future. I think our intention would be to be as compatible with as much as we can be. However, we’re a small team, so I can’t imagine us doing the heavy lifting of supporting X if no one else is. I also can’t imagine us doing much of anything if there’s little interest in it.
I will also say that our goal is not to support the oldest, lowest spec hardware out there. We aim for lightweight, but not at the expense of practicality. Similarly, if the vast majority of users are using more modern equipment, it doesn’t make sense to spend a bunch of our limited resources trying to make Lubuntu work for older, less common gear.
As for Wayland, it’s still relatively new. Some of the issues you point out will inevitably get ironed out. Well, hopefully. If more and more folks switch to Wayland and there’s less options to use X instead, those issues will likely get fixed. It’s kind of a chicken and egg problem.
One thing that is true: X has many problems. Wayland simplifies them. The future with Wayland is brighter, even if it is not obvious yet.
As far as I know, no. The opposite is certainly possible.
I’m glad having replies from an Lubuntu dev member.

For an distro support X11 need much work and long time ?
Not is simple continue using distro previous versions mainly if is Ubuntu based.
In less of 2 years has softwares change the dependencies requirements.
For example today Peazip QT version requirement is QT6. Not is possible install in Noble.
For that type of problem the solution is appimage because has inside QT6 not need QT6 installed in OS, but this solution could come to an end when request glibc new versions that software dev can’t create inside of appimage file.
Today Lubuntu Focal is practically unusable for several types of softwares and even games emulators too.
Unfortunately are types of problems that happen in Linux distros and not are good.
@wxl
“But upgrading is something you can do in a few minutes, so who cares?”
Have much softwares installed manually without PPA or using Ubuntu servers. For example FreeTube, Free Download Manager, CherryTree, PeaZip, Shutter Enconder and much others. Thus need an version compatible with Lubuntu current version.
I’ve already had problems upgrading Lubuntu and then some softwares not run needing wait for an new version.
I understand Lubuntu goal is to use less hardware resources so is faster.
I remember starting Lubuntu 20.04 using USB drive for testing in an Phenom X4 using an slow IGP Geforce 6100. Have graphics errors in sddm perhaps because that IGP use an old opengl version. However for text editing, internet browsing and others software run very fast.
We can say that Lubuntu resurrect old hardware if the cpu is 64 bits and GPU not has driver errors. Lubuntu run more faster than the default Ubuntu.
I like Lubuntu because LXQT is simple and faster and not is loaded with softwares in OS startup.
However LXQT has some problems. For example if you start an software that use QT and you has opened an menu and happen an internal freeze for several seconds if alternating for other softwares the mouse pointer disappears. If the freezed software not return to normal need an forced reset because htop not can’t stop that software.
Other detail not related with Lubuntu LXQT.
Since 2020 I has changed from windows to Linux.
Linux has much good features. However has few problems related with distros.
Thus I has used BTRFS for OS partition. My experience is in paper BTRFS is fantastic and in reality is other thing. BTRFS when are working is really very good, but if happen an error is an big trouble.
I’ve lost count of number of times has happened the terrible fatal error “parent transid”. If when are happen an larger written on disk in power off has risk of happen the parent transid error.
Not is possible mount the partition showing the error message with 2 code of numbers.
If both 2 code of number are close in 20 units is possible to do few commands an force an mount partition and then an little written so automatically the file system will be fixed.
However if both 2 codes not are close in 20 units is fatal error … ALL FILES ARE LOST … not is possible any fix.
CAUTION using BTRFS for data files and for external USB drives. You know when you try to connect an USB drive and not is correctly connected and you move for an side and the disk is recognized ? That happened with an one of my disks. Simply the BTRFS table was damaged only because the disk not was connected correctly in USB slot even not happening any written. ALL FILES LOST !
That’s absurd for an file system with an good list of features. Not has any protection against that type of error. That not happen in ext3, NTFS, FAT32 and others file systems.
If is possible install Lubuntu in an bacachefs I need try to do it. However in Lubuntu installation not has any option to create an bcachefs volume.
I see your problem, but unfortunately for you, that sort of software is not something we necessarily support. Additionally, it seems that the software you want to use doesn’t want to support old versions of Lubuntu.
I can’t say I understand what you’re talking about here. I would suggest using ubuntu-bug to file a bug against whatever component it is.
Manually, you can do anything you want. If the software exists to do so (I’m pretty sure it does not exist in the Ubuntu repos), you can set up the partitioning scheme however you want and then run the installer, using the existing partitions.
