Limiting brand new user accounts

Yeah sorry,- think that frustration was about to get the better of me.
Thanks for the cool and calm answer, (as opposed to my poorly hidden sarcastic reply).

4 posts were split to a new topic: EOL Upgrades wiki page

Hi, I am a new user.
I have used some few Discourse forums before, but they were not set up as restricted as this one.

I have read https://blog.discourse.org/2018/06/understanding-discourse-trust-levels/, which gives the impression that I should be able to post topics, but I cannot even see a new topic button. Peeking around, I found this thread and I decided to try and contact a moderator as suggested by Ian Weisser.

While I was preparing the message, however, I received a notification of having been bumped to the next level. So, I posted the message I came here for. Then I decided to come back to this thread to inform you about the experience I had, with no judgment involved.

Not cool, i’m a new user looking for the new topic button and i couldn’t find it, now i have to fake a bunch of interactions to get trust level 1? Doesn’t sound like a good solution to your problem…

As I have explained a few times around the place. The reason why the limits are there is because this site was since the start NOT a support site. That largely hasn’t been an issue for years because the site was designed as a place where Ubuntu developers and the community could collaborate. Not for randos to come here for help with their network/printer/cat/whatever.

The surprise migration of LXD forums here meant that there was an influx of new accounts, who couldn’t ask questions, yourself included. That was (in my opinion) simply poor planning and a lack of institutional knowledge within Canonical due to staff turnover.

@aaronprisk @ian-weisser I dunno if you guys want to undo this, so people can get in and start threads immediately. It’s no longer something I have to worry about on a daily basis, so it’s entirely up to you guys and gals. :man_shrugging:

Hey @popey,
There are some ongoing discussions on how best to limit that incoming friction for the LXD community members. It is unlikely to be a revocation of the new user trust policy (for the reasons you mentioned), but some tweaks and improved on-boarding to help folks reach that trust level faster.

It would be good to adjust the welcome message. Seems that didn’t actually get modified to inform people about the new topic limitation - this is what I see:

Also keep in mind an unintended side effect of this policy is that new users may hunt around for places where they can drop a reply to increase their trust.

Around posts 10-15 of this topic (2019) folks are (similarly?) confused by new-user limits that were clearly stated in the welcome message from @discobot. Are you saying that @discobot didn’t send you the message?

Folks who want to open a new topic --but cannot due to their “new” status-- may wish scroll up and review post #15 in this topic first. It may save a lot of frustration.

Which part of that message are you referring to?

I did get a message from discobot titled “Greetings”, but I didn’t open it until now. I recommend placing this message in the new member banner welcome I screenshotted above. Seems like the two messages serve the same purpose - if possible, maybe they could be generated from the same text.

May or may not?, are you sure (of possibility)?

outdated post, which isn’t helpful

A post was split to a new topic: Cannot create new topic

I agree, and am doing the same right here. Curious how much interaction I have to pretend in order to get my production container back to work.

How new users can reach the LXD team to receive support is answered at About the Support category (for LXD).

“Pretending” is not necessary nor desirable.

maybe it would be a good idea to

  1. mention the limitation plus
  2. provide a hint on how to overcome those in the greeting message ?

For me, yes, it is too much of a stumbling block and frustrating. All I want to do is learn Ubuntu and specifically how to download the Debian package files I need to run the 4Kvideo downloader. Thanks.

@davel-999 Seems like you were misdirected.

Classic support questions (including many “learning Ubuntu”) are generally off-topic for Ubuntu Discourse. Ubuntu Discourse has a different purpose.

Ubuntu has many great support venues, and many happy volunteers ready to give you good advice about installing software and “learning Ubuntu.” See Finding Help

As a level 0 user, I was looking for a way to post a new topic. I found a blue link at the end of the topic list.

There are no more Design topics. Ready to start a new conversation?

I was then rejected to do so with a web error, 505 if I remember correctly. I searched, found about @discobot (that I first ignored), I did the whole teaching lesson, by doing so, I read a link he gave me, learned about the trust level, supposed this was the origin of the error and am now writing to you after loosing a full day of work. I doubt most user will go that far and most of them probably quit before getting here. I just found out this as been reported by @aimoa, thank to her (him/it), but still I think rejecting and saving the new topic with a comprehensive message would help keep the users and dont forget that ubuntu is Linux for human beings.

Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.

Maybe the designers of this Discourse website are enthousiastic, but for me as user it is a nightmare
I an used to login and select a catagory to post relevant things or asking questions.
This website treads me like a baby and I really don’t like that.
