Guess the release 26.04 - R

Hi everyone!
As the Quokka is already Questing around the tech world, it is time to put on our thinking caps, polish our crystal balls, and :crystal_ball:Guess the Release! :crystal_ball:

What is a release mascot?

More than 20 years ago, the very first release of Ubuntu was the Warty Warthog. That’s how the cycle of Ubuntu mascots began! Since then, moving in alphabetical order, we’ve had a mascot for each and every Ubuntu release.

But how?

By now, some of you might be asking yourselves, “But how?” Are the releases magically created by AI? We’re not going to spoil the secret recipe behind the birth of a mascot, but believe it or not, humans, not machines, are behind it! :brain:

Sounds fun? Let’s have some fun together!

If you’ve been around the orange side of Linux, you know that people in the community have their favorite release mascots. They become attached to certain ones and might even spend a considerable amount of time playing games against their friends, guessing what the new release mascot will be. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do with you!

Yes, this is an official activity of the Ubuntu community! :drum::drum::drum:

Where are the rules?

  • :boar: Guess the next mascot codename. Add your best guess as a reply to this thread. This includes both an adjective and an animal (or perhaps mythical creature?) that starts with the letter of the next release of Ubuntu: R
  • :one: One suggestion for each person will be taken into consideration. So, please submit your best idea!
  • :hourglass:The first one to post a winning suggestion, will get a special badge on the Ubuntu Discourse.
  • :stop_sign: A maximum of three badges will be awarded to individuals who guess: only the adjective, only the animal, both adjective and animal.
  • :name_badge: Secret and special badges might be awarded for particularly creative or fun ideas :zipper_mouth_face::ninja:.

When do we do this?

The activity starts now, 10th September 2025, and it will end when the codename of the next Ubuntu release is publicly announced.

Special thanks

:mega: Special thanks to @mclemenceau for this super fun idea, and @aaronprisk for the artwork!

Our last LTS was Noble, so why not make this one Regal? And let’s see, over the last couple years we’ve used rodents, birds, antelopes, anteaters, and seafood creatures, maybe there’s something else for this time around

bah, couldn’t think of one. Let’s just reuse antelopes since they’re awesome. A lot of times the animal names end up being for more esoteric species from Africa or Australia, so maybe a Reedbuck would work here?

Regal Reedbuck.

Careful what you mention. We almost ended up with Bendy Badger once.

This is fun  Here’s my guess for the mascot codename of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS:

Known for being tame and approachable, especially around humans

Rakish Robin

Rhinos and Raccoons have already been proposed, so how about: Rational Reindeer

I think Rhino might be difficult for other reasons, and now everyone’s already taken all the obvious animals.

I’m throwing in for Radiant Rattlesnake. :star2: :snake:

I’m from downunder, and thus gotta pick another local

risky redback

(completely wrong for a LTS release I know, but ringtail possums, red kangaroos, rainbow lorikeets, red-tailed [black] cockatoos & other R animals always needed another word(s); when you see a redback you just stop & never need that extra word ‘spider’
someone’s gotta get that ‘wooden spoon’ reward )
