Event Report - UbuCon Europe @ OpenSouthCode 2025

This year the Ubuntu community is traveling around the world, spreading the word of the orange side of Linux. UbuCon Europe, as announced in this Discourse post, was co-located at OpenSouthCode 2025. Working with the passionate Spanish open source community was an inspiring experience and a beautiful story of passion and collaboration. If you are wondering what the secret southern recipe of UbuCon, you are in the right place. Let’s have a look! :eyes:

Breathtaking Málaga

Málaga is an absolutely stunning city in Andalusia, just by the sea. The combination of sun, Mediterranean breeze, bright colors, friendly folks and amazing food makes it a very popular touristic destination. This combination of traits set us all in a mood of happiness, boosted our energy level and charged us for the event that was about to happen!

Beautiful event venue

The venue chosen for OpenSouthCode is no exception to the beauty of Málaga. Just walking in the stunning La Térmica we knew this was going to be a fantastic event. What a treat!

Orange spreading in the world of OpenSouthCode

We knew we were in for a challenge. With the beautiful city, stunning venue, we knew we would have to turn the orange to the maximum levels, challenge accepted! :rocket:

Our double booth was packed with useful information showcasing all the open source projects connected to Ubuntu, QR-Codes and feedback forms were ready for the attendees, knowledgeable Ubuntu and Canonical folks were ready to answer all the burning questions. Talks and workshops were accepted. Gorgeous merchandise carefully selected for the event.

Thanks to the amazing LXD team, we also had a special surprise: The Microcloud cluster box loaded with demos, and backed by experts at the booth! What an incredible success, the conversations started thanks to this irresistible combo of tech and people!

Talks, workshops, and demos!

With talks, workshops and demos ranging across the whole spectrum of open source, it was quite frequent to see an orange polo up on stage! Design, documentation, community, LXD, Juju, Observability and much more. If you missed this UbuCon Europe, you also missed many incredible opportunities to learn valuable skills, provide feedback and get involved in open source.

Inspiring people

At UbuCon Europe this year we met old friends from Slimbook, DeepComputing, KDE, OpenSearch, and many more projects. We also made new friends, many of those traveled on their own, specifically to attend some of the sessions and workshops delivered by Ubuntu and Canonical.

OpenSouthKids

OpenSouthCode has an entire area with organizers, hardware, activities, all geared to peek the interest of the younger generations, this is called OpenSouthKids. What a breath of fresh air, having kids running around the venue, getting their first interactions with the world of technology, writing their first “hello world” and doing it with all the joy in the world!
Obviously, a few of the OpenSouthKids came to the Ubuntu booth and thoroughly interrogated us on the meaning of each sticker, logo, project and device we had around.
