Dell 7440 camera not working

Hi @federicarike,
My MIPI camera was working until the last update few weeks ago. I also have a Dell Latitude 7440 with Ubuntu 22.04. I followed the instructions you gave to @mrivera76 :

My machine

# hostnamectl

removing intel-ipu6

# sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:oem-solutions-group/intel-ipu6

Description:
This is a edge development branch to integrating the Intel MIPI IPU6 stack.

Hi @FilipoRviz,

First off, let us remove not only the repository but also all the packages linked to ipu6 or ipu7
sudo apt autopurge oem-*-meta libia-* libgcss* libipu* libcamhal*
sudo apt autopurge lib*ipu6*
sudo apt autopurge lib*ipu7*

Then, what do you get for

sudo ubuntu-drivers list

?
Also, do you have

sudo apt install ubuntu-oem-keyring

and the 8th repository contains

somerville-lapras-13

that is linked to the Dell 7340.

For the new OEM metapackage I checked, but it seems it should need linux-generic-hwe-22.04.

Let us first check the repository/ipu6/7 package thing and the drivers list. Lemme know.

Hi @federicarike, thanks for your fast answer.

I removed the packages and rebooted the machine.

`$ sudo apt autopurge oem-*-meta libia-* libgcss* libipu* libcamhal*`
`$ sudo apt autopurge lib*ipu6*`
`$ sudo apt autopurge lib*ipu7*`
...
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libcamhal-common* oem-somerville-lapras-13-meta* oem-somerville-lapras-meta*
  oem-somerville-meta*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
...
E: Unable to locate package lib*ipu7*

$ sudo reboot

Despite of purging with apt (I doubleckhecked with apt remove and apt autopurge. It says is uninstalled.) , Lapras is still appearing in the list of drivers:

$ sudo ubuntu-drivers list
libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom
oem-somerville-lapras-meta

I checked with the Additional Drivers GUI and Lapras is disabled.

and I have installed the oem-keyring:

$ sudo apt install ubuntu-oem-keyring
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
ubuntu-oem-keyring is already the newest version (2021.03.26).

By the way, my machine is a Latitude 7440.

Cheers!

@FilipoRviz Perfect! Now that’s all cleaned up, we should be able to install the metapackage for Dell 7440 and have no further issues:

sudo apt install oem-somerville-lapras-meta

I assume that the fingerprint reader is working properly with libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom.
Let us see what happens.
Then

reboot

Hi @federicarike,

The fingerprint reader is working without issues since the beginning of times. c :

I installed oem-somerville-lapras-meta, rebooted but the camera is not being recognized by Cheese, VLC or Chrome. :c
I checked again with the Additional Drivers GUI, unselected the Lapras, rebooted, installed again and selected again from Drivers GUI.

Launching Cheese from terminal shows the same error (with different ports)

GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **
cheese-WARNING : 10:55:03.067: Device '/dev/video0' does not support 2:0:0:0 colorimetry ...
Device wants 2:0:0:0 colorimetry

UPDATE
My cam works now.

I went back to the Software & Updates GUI, removed the few repeated entries for http://dell.archive.canonical.com/ jammy somerville. After I saved the changes, it updated the cache, I rebooted and then I went back to the Additional Drivers and I found some new drivers.

$ sudo ubuntu-drivers list
oem-fix-misc-cnl-backport-iwlwifi-helper
libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom
oem-somerville-lapras-meta
oem-fix-misc-cnl-i915-disable-psr
libcamhal0

The camera does not works with oem-somerville-lapras-meta
The camera works with oem-fix-misc-cnl-i915-disable-psr

This is the configuration that enables my camera:

The libia-* libgcss-* and libcamhal* were installed again.
libipu-* was not installed again

The camera is recognized by Cheese but is not working. I can live with that. : D

(cheese:6708): cheese-WARNING **: 11:33:21.832: Internal data stream error.: ../libs/gst/base/gstbasesrc.c(3127): gst_base_src_loop (): /GstCameraBin:camerabin/GstWrapperCameraBinSrc:camera_source/GstBin:bin18/GstPipeWireSrc:pipewiresrc1:

The camera works fine with VLC, Chrome & Zoom.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers.

That’s amazing! I am happy it worked out!

I was about to suggest you to report the bug on the Cheese page, if you like:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cheese

That app has quite some issues!

Have an amazing day!
