Boot on USB flash drive Ubuntu 24.04.1 on DELL xps 13 9370 : something has gone wrong

Hi,

Ubuntu Version: 22.04.1 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable): Gnome

Problem Description:

I wanted to install Ubuntu 20.04.1 on my laptop, DELL xps-13 9370.

It has already run Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04 and currently 22.04.

Unfortunately when I boot on USB Flash drive, I have a background screen with “Oh no! Something has gone wrong” (see screenshot).

I have a small window where I can hardly enter some install parameters, and when I validate “live Ubuntu” and not install nothing happen and I have only the background screen.

What I’ve Tried:

I have installed my old DELL Latitude 6520 with the same key and it worked, but it does not display the same install screens.

Thank for your help

It sounds like you want to do a fresh install using new installation media. Had you considered an upgrade instead?

So sorry for the delay, but I went to buy another USB-C - UBS-A adapter and an USB-C key just to try. Unfortenately, it didn’t solve the problem, I have the same problem using an USB-C and another adapter.

Hi Federica,

When I try to switch to the terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F3, I got a strange blinking prompt that disapear almost immediately

Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS ubuntu tty3

Authentication failed

Then I just see a cursor ‘_’ and can do nothing.

Hi Walter,

I do not want to make an upgrade, I like to make a fresh install every LTS to remove the accumulated stuff.

I am working with my computer, if there were any trouble with an upgrade I would be stuck.

That makes sense.

Next thing: did you verify the integrity of the downloaded ISO and installation media?

Yes and I used it successfully on my DELL Latitude 6520.

Technically that just ensures the sums are signed. I assume you also used the sums to verify the image?

This is not good advice. They’re on a live environment. Doing apt upgrade is not the solution here.

Yes I did

$ sha256sum -c ubuntu-24.04.1-SHA256SUMS 2>&1

Excellent. Can you provide the specs for this machine?

The following live USB “work” for my laptop :

  • Debian live 12.9.0 amd64 gnome
  • Manjaro gnome 24.2.1

But Mint Cinnamon 22 is also stucked but only with a cursor and no display. Nothing happen with Ctrl + Alt + F3

Here are the specs. Sorry, it is in French

I saw there may be a 24.04.2 release next week, may be there is a beta installer I could try ?

on live USB mode

Try redoing whatever command you did and prefixing it with LANG=C for something not in French, e.g. LANG=C inxi. I’m not suggesting that command, per se, though.

I’m not sure why the release schedule for Noble wasn’t updated for it, but it’s delayed until the 20th. The HWE kernel was missing in most images. That shouldn’t affect vanilla Ubuntu (as far as I know), though, if that is what you’re using. You can download daily images, but I can’t guarantee they will be in a "beta’ state. Still, for testing purposes, it might be good. Go to the testing tracker for Plucky, click on the flavor version you want, and then click on the “Link to download instructions.” That would be here for vanilla Ubuntu amd64.

The specs are a csv export that I got with my service tag, not with a command in the terminal.

My initial post contained the result of lspci, tell me what command would display the information that you wanted to have.

I tried the image you pointed, Download links for Ubuntu Desktop amd64 | Ubuntu QA

It worked but it seems to be for the future 25.04 release, not a 24.04.2 - Noble Numbat. Moreover the image does not seem to use the same installation screen, I directly have a desktop even if it is quite long.

I can wait the 20th, thanks a lot for your help !

So 16GB of RAM? If so, that eliminates my primary concern.

Maybe this is some kind of graphics issue but if you can’t get to a virtual terminal (that’s what was suggested with the CtrlAltF3 thing, there’s no real way to investigate that. Unless there’s some other way to get to a terminal.

Excuse my ignorance about the installer, but I primarily contribute to Lubuntu and we use a different installer (where it’s actually rather easy to get to a terminal or anything else).

Oops, try here.

If that’s not right I guess vanilla Lubuntu does things a lot differently than everything else.

I tried the last iso you pointed me at, but it did not solve the problem. The behaviour is the same, I will try to fill a bug report on launchpad.

I can confirm I experience exactly the same issue. I wanted to just try Ubuntu 24.04.2 (Try Ubuntu without installing) but I’ve got the same error you’ve got.
I’ve build the bootable usb according to documentation: Create a bootable USB stick with Rufus on Windows | Ubuntu

@fcodvpt did you file that bug report? If so, link it here so @geekomano can go and mark it as affecting them, too.

Yes, here is the bug report : Bug #2098940 “Desktop boot on Ubuntu 24.04.1 installer fails on ...” : Bugs : subiquity

I also tried Ubuntu 24.04.2 and the problem is still the same on my computer.

thanks @fcodvpt !
I’ve added myself to the bug report.
I think I will give 22.04.5 a try, considering it has standard support until 04-2027 is not a bad option and I have the feeling it will work.
