Xubuntu 25.04 Beta ISOs are now available for download and testing. Codenamed “Plucky Puffin”, the thirty-ninth release of Xubuntu prominently features the newly released Xfce 4.20 and benefits from many bug fixes, delivering a wonderful and stable desktop operating system for everyone.

Despite its relative stability, this milestone is prerelease software. It should not be installed on production hardware (e.g. anything that you depend on) and provides no guarantee of support. Instead, we welcome testing and reporting of both the Xubuntu Desktop and Xubuntu Minimal beta ISOs to identify and fix issues before the final release on April 17, 2025.

What’s new in Xubuntu 25.04?

  • Xfce 4.20 includes several new features and bug fixes. While Xfce 4.20 focused on Wayland support, it is still incomplete, and no Wayland session is included in Xubuntu 25.04.
  • GNOME 48 apps are included: Disk Analyzer, Font Viewer, Mines, and Sudoku.
  • GIMP 3.0, the long-awaited update to the powerful image editor features a port to GTK 3, better color management, and many more improvements.
  • OpenVPN support has been added to Xubuntu (LP: #2057923)
  • More image formats (avif, heic, heif, webp) are now supported (LP: #2084324)
  • The Super Key shortcut to show the menu is now more reliable and configurable (LP: #2084326)
  • Print Preview now supports Atril, the document viewer included in Xubuntu (LP: #2025332)
  • Virtual machines are now better supported. The Xorg crash (LP: #1861609) that plagued Xubuntu for years has been patched in 25.04 and will soon make its way to all supported releases.

Known Issues

  • GRUB menu not displayed for dual-boot system installation (LP: #2060624)
  • Installer may select two root (/) partitions (LP: #2060896)
  • No shutdown prompt after installation (LP: #1944519)
    • However, you should be able to press the Enter key to continue with the reboot
  • Poor performance and audio stuttering in some virtual machines, including VMware and VirtualBox
  • OEM installation is not available
