I was previously using my controller with EndeavourOS and was able to get it working just fine there before something happened and I had to install Xubuntu instead. However, now that I’m on Xubuntu, when I turn on my controller and try to connect it to my computer with Bluetooth, no controller seems to show up in the list of devices. I’ve tried resetting the controller but nothing seems to have changed. I’d greatly appreciate any help in getting my controller to connect to my computer again.
Does Bluetooth detect anything? Please post results from terminal for uname -r; lsusb; sudo dmesg | egrep -i 'blue|firm'
Realized I could just put the output in code so I’m gonna do that instead. Here are the results from the terminal for that command:

I just deleted your earlier post since it was redundant.
Why don’t you watch that last command as you turn on the controller with sudo dmesg -W | egrep -i 'blue|firm'
?
Might want to watch bluetoothctl
or even sudo dmesg -w
in terminal.
Gave that a try. Nothing showed in the terminal after that, even as I turned on my controller and its logo lit up. Eventually it stopped blinking and shut off again, without any messages appearing in the terminal.
Might want to run it without the pipe into grep
but that’s curious. Looks like you have other devices connected to and pairing with the Bluetooth, right?
When I ran sudo dmesg -w in the terminal, I got a lot of text as output, and I couldn’t get the terminal to actually show me everything. Here’s the section I could copy:

When I use the Bluetooth Manager and click the “search” button, other devices do appear in the list, but none of them have names I recognize, I don’t use any other bluetooth devices with my computer so I haven’t tested if other devices can connect.
I was just going with the flow here but after further inspection, dmesg
isn’t going to provide much help here. bluetoothctl
is a better suggestion.
Upon running, you’ll get to a kind of command prompt of sorts, like so:
Waiting to connect to bluetoothd...[bluetooth]# Agent registered
[bluetooth]#
You can do things with this interactive prompt, but don’t do anything with it. Just turn on your device and run the search¹. You should see devices iterated. Here’s an example from a mouse I have:
[bluetooth]# [NEW] Device 00:1F:20:E1:CC:24 Ultrathin Touch Mouse
Here’s connecting to it:
[CHG] Device 00:1F:20:E1:CC:24 Connected: yes
[Ultrathin Touch Mouse]# [CHG] Device 00:1F:20:E1:CC:24 Modalias: usb:v046DpB00Dd0700

[Ultrathin Touch Mouse]# [CHG] Device 00:1F:20:E1:CC:24 Paired: yes
¹ If you’d like to use the command prompt, you could do scan on
:
[bluetooth]# scan on
[bluetooth]# SetDiscoveryFilter success
[bluetooth]# Discovery started
[bluetooth]# [CHG] Controller 40:A6:D9:F9:0B:A8 Discovering: yes
Turned the controller on and entered bluetoothctl. As you can see below, there wasn’t anything showing up in the output that resembled a controller:
bluetoothctl

Did you turn the scan on?
I tried Wednesday but forgot to paste the output of that.
Here’s what I got this morning when I typed bluetoothctl
into the console and typed scan on
after it. I then turned the controller on during the scan and waited to try to see if a device labeled “XBOX controller” appeared, but I didn’t see one.

What I find fascinating is it’s not resolving the names of those devices. It’s rather atypical in my experience. That example I gave above with the Ultrathin mouse wasn’t a device that had already been paired. I wonder if there isn’t something fundamentally amiss with your setup or maybe even your Bluetooth adapter.
So first I took a really close comb through all those logs you sent. Everything looks really good. The one issue I see is Bluetooth: hci0: Malformed MSFT vendor event: 0x02
and according to the Arch Forums this is a totally cosmetic issue and the “fix” seems to be to just ignore it. What’s interesting is the problem happens to be specifically related to Intel Bluetooth devices, which is what you have.
Let’s go through some obvious things. Sorry if these sound like I’m asking you stupid questions, but I just want to make sure we cover all the bases. In no particular order:
- I presume you have made the controller discoverable/in pairing mode before running the scan?
- I would expect that
rfkill
shows that your Bluetooth adapter (hci0) is unblocked. It’d be a little weird if it wasn’t. - Do you have any other Bluetooth devices you can use to test? If not, can you borrow from someone else? It could be anything: headphones, a mouse, etc. If you have a device that’s known to work on another machine and it doesn’t work on yours, then there’s something wrong either with the system or the adapter.
- Similarly, try a USB Bluetooth dongle. If the known device works there but not with your built-in, then it’s an adapter issue (though it isn’t necessarily hardware related; it could be the config of the adapter).
- Were you using the same kernel version with EndeavourOS? If not, which one?
- I assume this has persisted across reboots. If not, I’d reboot and see if that helps.
Turns out I had simply forgotten how to pair my controller with a new device - I had to hold down the pairing button on the top of the controller, not simply turn it on. https://www.howtogeek.com/707503/how-to-put-your-xbox-controller-into-pairing-mode/
Thanks for being so patient. I’m glad the issue turned out to be so simple since that meant the solution was simple too.
Hah well I’m very glad it was that simple. I’m still baffled as to why your adapter wasn’t resolving device names but maybe there’s something I don’t understand. At least now you have some clues for troubleshooting Bluetooth should it become an issue again.
When I tested with my Bluetooth Earbuds and finally managed to get the Bluetooth Xbox controller working, the device names did show up - so it is capable of resolving some device names at least, it seems.
News to me but I guess there are at least some devices without names so that probably solves that one, too.
There, we both learned something
