X11 or Wayland in Ubuntu MATE 26.04 LTS

Ubuntu Desktop is switching to Wayland. Whenever you developers of Ubuntu MATE are reasonably sure, please let us know if x11 will be the default, or if it will an option to select x11 in the next version, Ubuntu MATE 26.04 LTS.

Ubuntu desktop already switched to wayland. Ubuntu MATE uses MATE 1.26 and is probably sticking to that which isn’t wayland compatible afaik? X11/Xorg isn’t going away as has been explained in the other topic it will move from main to universe.

MATE 1.28 wasn’t included because it didn’t make it into Debian and i’m not sure if it is wayland ready. As with many projects, active development slowed to a crawl or even ceased because of the lack of manpower and private life priorities.

The flavors and DE’s that still rely on X11 are still able to use it as default.

Feel free to correct me if i’m wrong.

In the release notes for 1.28 there is some support for Wayland.

Some support for Wayland, that means not fully supported yet. Let’s hope that will change once 1.29 comes out.

Since I only use LTS versions the likelihood of me seeing full Wayland support will probably have to wait until 28.04,but in the meantime I’m looking forward to seeing and using Mate 1.28 on 26.04.
