I One thing I really do not want to do is to upgrade my ubuntu to 24.?? its ready as one time was enough for me until its REALLY ready (might even be now - still not sure).
Anyway, I thought I would send this and somebody can give me thoughts on it all.
You’ve pasted commands showing your release, and packages available for upgrade. Then mention not wanting to release-upgrade and why, then asking for thoughts?
I don’t know what you’re actually asking for, nor expecting.
Several months ago, when the upgrade first came out I installed it. It was a flat out disaster. I have since gone back to 22.04 which is more stable. Last time I looked (week or so ago) there were still problems which is why I was asking if it was working better.
Maybe for you, and we sympathize that you had a frustrating experience.
For many others, it’s been stable and great since release day.
Your experience was not universal.
Since we don’t know what problems you encountered (you didn’t mention), nor why you encountered them, we don’t know if you might encounter them again.
We don’t know if it will work better for you now. Sorry.
Upgradable does not mean upgradable to new release, but just on current release. If you want keep your current release open ‘Software & Updates’ and in ‘Updates’ for ‘Notify me of a new…’ select ‘Never’
I have never upgraded from one version of Xubuntu to the next but always carried out a new, clean install using a separate /home partition which I carry over to the new Xubuntu version.
Like Ian says above, my 24.04 has also been trouble free so I wonder if your instability is related to the upgrade rather than simply being a problem of 24.04.
Tell us in more detail about your failed previous attempt or it’s impossible to be more helpful.
My problem was too massive to explain. Basically, my computer stopped working. I re-installed 22.04 and everything is fine.
Now my system, when I press my enter key will freeze. There is no reason for it. I just restart, do the same thing and everything is fine. As far as I can tell nobody else has this so its something I will live with. It only happens on one of my systems and I can do that.
My software updater told me to upgrade to 24.10 from 22.04 I pressed the key and it just went away. I started the updater again and, then, it told me to upgrade to 24.04
Simple question - what is going on? Should I even upgrade from my software updater? I have had problems and am being a bit careful.
Software updater offers (not tells you) to upgrade. There is plenty of information out there for you to make a decision regarding upgrading. Try You Tube.
If your current (22.04?) is stable, I would stick with it and just use it to gain more experience and confidence.
You can run 24.04 LTS in a Virtual machine, test and see if it suitable. Only you can make the decision.
