Ubuntu Studio Does Not Shut Down From Menu Item

Ubuntu Version:

Ubuntu Studio 24.10

Desktop Environment (if applicable):

KDE Plasma
Problem Description:

When I try to shut down Ubuntu Studio from the Application Launcher menu, the computer seems to exit Plasma, leaving a black screen with a working mouse pointer, then does nothing.

However, if I use the shutdown command in a Konsole window, it shuts down normally.

Relevant System Information:

Screenshots or Error Messages:

What I’ve Tried:

If I use ctrl-alt F3 to change to another tty, I can also run the shutdown command.

I’ve also started looking at the log files, but am really not sure what to look for - similar(ish) problems reported are more often about unwanted system shut downs.

Can you show us this:

 gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-log-out

Both should show false.

Does that actually work with KDE?

Yeppers! and waiting on the OP for confirmation.

Never mind here is proof:

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen && inxi -F|grep Desktop
false
  Desktop: KDE Plasma v: 6.2.5 Distro: TUXEDO OS 24.04.1 LTS noble

Yeah I just tried it on my Lubuntu system and it works, too. News to me, but I think it’s all from glib, so it makes sense.

Going back to the issue at hand, I wonder if that really is the problem, though. It’s clear that something is happening. It’s just not expected behavior. If it was disabled, I would imagine nothing would happen.

I would be inclined to suggest looking in the journal for any errors.

Thanks for the suggestion 1fallen - but unfortunately they do both show false.

Something might be astray in " /usr/share/dbus-1/services "
Could or would you give this try, and it is reversable.

Create at least one file in ** /usr/share/dbus-1/services ** for shutdown.

Include this

[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.kde.Shutdown
Exec=/usr/bin/plasma-shutdown

Save the file named as " org.kde.Shutdown.service "
And Lastly let’s enable the service

This is not needed. It will be active on next session.
##sudo systemctl enable org.kde.Shutdown.service

If you need a logout as well let me know, but please let me know if this works for you first.

Please see @eeickmeyer 's post below, but I tested my theory on Studio, Arch, and Ubuntu based systems all worked without a hitch.

 cd /usr/share/dbus-1/services && cat org.kde.Shutdown.service && fastfetch | grep -e WM -e DE
[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.kde.Shutdown
Exec=/usr/bin/plasma-shutdown
   DE: KDE Plasma 6.3.1
   WM: KWin (X11)
   WM Theme: Breeze

(Ubuntu Studio lead here)

I have this problem in Ubuntu Studio 24.10 as well, and it might be occurring in Kubuntu 24.10.

As far as I know, it’s a known bug in Plasma X11 6.1 with Nvidia graphics, but does not exist in Plasma Wayland. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it’s one of those “Won’t Fix” bugs because the KDE Kwin team has no interest in furthermore developing or fixing bugs for X11.

So try switching to Plasma Wayland at login (that’s the default as of 24.10) and see if that works.

Thanks to both 1fallen and eeickmeyer for the suggestions. Neither has worked so far but both are giving useful information (I guess).

eeickmeyer - interestingly, I can’t seem to log into a Wayland session. I tried using “Switch User” to log out (Log Out just gives the same black screen as Shut Down) but if I select Plasma Wayland, instead of starting up Plasma, I get a second login screen with no session options, then when I log into that, Kinfocenter reports that I’m still using X11. I was able to get a Wayland session previously with both Kubuntu and OpenSuse, so I doubt that this is a hardware problem.

1fallen - there was already a "org.kde.Shutdown.service " file in that directory, and when I opened it, it already contained the text you said to include. However, when I tried “sudo systemctl enable org.kde.Shutdown.service” in the console, it gives the error message: “Failed to enable unit: Unit org.kde.Shutdown.service does not exist”.

I should add that recently, after an update I had to delete and reinstall the Nvidia drivers as the system stopped recognising my GPU. However, I’m fairly sure that the Shut Down problem existed before that.

If necessary, I’ll try reinstalling Ubuntu Studio from scratch next Monday. At least that way we can tell if this is inherent or if I’ve done something to mess up my system.

I have seen some report they needed to add it, but your golden on that end.

Yep that looks right, I should have deleted that command from my reply, it’s just not needed. And there is no harm running it, it’s just not necessary.

That sounds like a pain in the rear…but yes @eeickmeyer confirmed my thoughts on it being a bug on X11.
Best of luck to you. :slight_smile:
