Ubuntu Version:
We’re running a mix of 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS
Desktop Environment (if applicable):
Gnome and plain tty
Problem Description:
We have a mix of Ubuntu distributions - partly because we have embedded code on flight hardware, and can’t reinstall the OS on systems in orbit, so we need ground-side systems that match what’s flying.
I want to buy a set of 20 (for now) Ubuntu Pro licenses to allow us to maintain the OSes we have running (ffmpeg in particular is an issue) - but the on-line form wants to know which version we’re running.
What I’m hoping to do is buy a stack of 20 licenses and distribute them to systems as needed, as our vulnerability tracker identifies systems that need patches that are only available through an Ubuntu Pro license.
What I’m trying to find out - and can’t seem to get an answer to - is whether I can apply an Ubuntu Pro license to any of the distributions we’re supporting, or whether each license (token?) is tied to a specific distribution.
Given the way purchasing works where I’m at, it’s a whole lot easier to buy a bunch of licenses up front and have a few in reserve than it is to make separate license purchases as target machines are identified. It’s a question I’d ask sales support at most vendors - but Canonical doesn’t seem to have that.
Relevant System Information:
Systems are all stand-alone desktop type machines (no hypervisor; just native Ubuntu running on the hardware.)
What I’ve Tried:
I’ve tried using the “Contact Us” page on Canonical’s site several times, and have not received a response. We’re trying to spend money , most companies try to make that easy …
