Ubuntu Pro - FAQ

How do I list “Active machines” enumerated here: https://ubuntu.com/pro/dashboard

kthxbi

Is anything known about Ubuntu Pro/ESM causing problems when attached to Ubuntu VMs with Shared Drives? I have a VM with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Pro/ESM and since attaching Pro can no longer copy to/from any USB disks or memory sticks, with any attempt resulting in the devices becoming entirely inaccessible. Shall have to detach the VM from Ubuntu Pro to see if that will fix the issue.

Is it permitted to redistribute Ubuntu Pro packages, including those packages that are not licensed under GPL? (I don’t think you could restrict the right to redistribute GPL packages without violating GPL.)

hi @Robert

indeed, thanks to unattended-upgrades those updates will be done automatically (unless you disabled that feature, it is enabled by default)

you still need to reboot to apply the update, i think this is what confused you

finally, the information at the end provides source for the updates, 4 are standard security updates, 10 are thanks to your Ubuntu Pro subscription, hence 14 in total

hi @elrung

i see the use-case for it but sadly it’s not possible yet. @rajanpatel might be able to tell you more about the way in which Landscape plays a role in managing your Ubuntu estate

hi @ethanc8 ! thanks for reaching out!

Ubuntu Pro subscriptions include access to many different kinds of software, ranging from kernel patches to proprietary applications. Some of these are licensed under open source licenses, while others are not.

Section 4 of the* Ubuntu Pro service terms *covers licensing. Specifically, section 4.4 applies to software under the subscription that is not licensed under an open source license. That section grants a license to the Ubuntu Pro subscriber to use the software, but not to redistribute it.

My question was whether the code which was released by upstream under a permissive license would still be covered by that permissive license in Ubuntu Pro (as the permissive license would allow Canonical to release the software under a proprietary license if they wished to), but as I understand it:

Source code for packages in Ubuntu is distributed under a licence determined by the upstream software publishers.

means that Canonical does not change the license of such packages. Is this correct?

hi @werewulf75

We have never heard of any problems like that. As the Pro client doesn’t do anything that should impact anything related to shared drives.

But please register a ticket and the team will look into it OpenID transaction in progress

Hi @Lech,

Not sure if it’s really a bug as such. Might be just something weird due to Windows Hyper-V VM I’m beginning to suspect. Going to try detaching Pro, though doubt it’ll make a difference. Assuming it doesn’t, I’m then planning temporarily restoring an old backup of my 18.04.6 which was long before attaching to Pro as didn’t need this VM until a few months ago. Hopefully this will allow me to get on with some work with easy file exchange etc. Longer term, I’d really like to get rid of all Hyper-V VMs anyway and go with something allowing a proper full Ubuntu install rather than an MS edited edition with e.g. only limited terminal functionality, (almost) non-existent configurability, etc.

Anyway, thank you very much for your reply. As I somehow doubt the issue is due to any kind of bug in Pro, given that nothing like this is known, I won’t register a ticket for now. Wouldn’t want to waste anyone’s time with what might be a wild goose chase.

Hi @Lech,

Well, interesting - I restored my old 18.04 VM backup, and Bingo! Shared Drives fully usable in both directions, no problems in that respect. So the original problem must have been caused by some update that Ubuntu Pro had installed. However, somehow after some time the Gnome System Monitor disappeared - having been replaced by the latest Snap update which of course doesn’t work in 18.04! Otherwise, everything seems to work normally, although the Software Updater wants to install a number of updates, including listing a whole heap of Pro updates which are disbled of course but Updater says to enable Pro! Of course, I turn down all updates every time Updater starts up. This is temporarily workable, but the loss of System Monitor is a bit problematic.

A solution of sorts would be to restore the old backup again and come offline before the Sys Mon Snap gets installed. However, this then presents the problem of being able to work offline only. Far from ideal too.

I could try and track down which update that Pro installed was the likely culprit in causing the problem with the shared drives, if that’s any use to the team?

[Edit] Naturally, that could take some considerable time, in that I would have to enable just one update at a time and check, etc. [/Edit]

Our current practice has been to publish Ubuntu Pro patches under the same license as the package to which the patch applies. The intention is that, whether a patch is open source or not, each Ubuntu Pro subscriber can install it on their Ubuntu Pro machines without having to consider potential open source license conflicts or usage rights.
