Ubuntu Flavor and Governance sync meeting - Ubuntu Summit 2024

Representatives from the Ubuntu Flavors along with various Canonical and community leads met in-person at the Ubuntu Summit, October 26th 2024, from 18:00 to 20:00 PM Netherlands Time to discuss Ubuntu flavors, desktop and community governance.

@ilvipero Kicked things off, and gave a quick summary of what the flavor sync meetings are, their structure, rules and expectations:

  • Regular Flavour Sync Meetings:

    • Every 2 months: January, March, May, July, September, November
    • The last sync of the year is usually held in-person at the Ubuntu Summit
    • Second Monday every 2 months
    • Session1: 3PM UTC
    • Session 2: 10PM UTC
    • Meetings open for anyone interested to join
    • We are not streaming the meetings
    • Meeting highlights posted on Discourse
  • General guidelines for flavour sync meetings:

    • We encourage questions, especially from new and upcoming flavours.
    • If something is unclear, is blocking you, or you have constructive criticism on processes, documentation, or anything else, please speak up.
    • Keep the conversation friendly and CoC rules always apply
    • If there is a topic that would take up most of the meeting time, meeting host might ask you to take it offline, and follow up with updates on next flavour sync meeting and/or via Discourse / IRC / Matrix
  • Introducing the Ubuntu Governance sync meetings:

    • Same format as flavour sync meetings but on Tuesdays every 2 months.
    • All representatives of Ubuntu Governance bodies are invited to attend.

@merlijn-sebrechts Discussed the vision to move from platform-bound governance bodies, to purpose-bound governance bodies. The first step is to form a “Communications Council”, and invite members from the IRC Council, Forums Council, Matrix Council.
As the former Council terms expire, those councils will not be holding elections, instead, once terms for all former councils are up, a new election for the Communications Council will happen.
Operators groups are still platform-bound, as specific domain knowledge is required.

@merlijn-sebrechts continued the discussion with plans to consolidating communication platforms. More details will be shared around this in the upcoming weeks.

Ubuntu Flavor Sync Meetings take place every 2 months on the second Monday of that month. There are two sessions, 3PM UTC and 10PM UTC, to best accommodate our global community. All are welcome to join and participate in the discussion!
