After many goings on and with the help of Discourse users I have managed to get Steam working.
My last hurdle appears to be the controls. I control my games with a keyboard and mouse. Steam, however, appears to default to what I can only imagine is some sort of Playstation type steam device. It asks me to push the B button to save. I have no idea what that is (and I did goole a fair bit).
Ubuntu Version:
24.04LTS Kernel 6.14
Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNome
Steam defaults to controller buttons
Keychron wireless keyboard, wired mouse. No controllers
What I’ve Tried:
Looked around the steam menus for some form of toggle, found nothing
Is that happening for all games? Are you using Steam in in big picture mode? That’s made to be used with a controller. Otherwise it could be a game that requires a controller.
I’ve currently only one game installed, Fallout 76.
I don’t want to commit fully to 'Nux at this point, because so far all it’s done is give me grief.
And if i can’t get FO76 to work it’s simply not worth the hassle.
And I see no point in posting full machine specs and config files either. Maybe it would be wiser to ask this question on the Steam support forum though. I don’t think it’s a Linux issue. Why would it ask for a controller if there is none ?
Indeed, the ‘Link’ as Keychron calls it (the dedicated keyboard dongle) is identified by Steam as a gamepad. Conversely, the keyboard is nowhere to be found and Steam defaults to a controller.
Unplugging the dongle and connecting the keyboard by USB cable solves the issue. I have not tried connecting by cable but leaving the dongle in place.
Incidentally, asking the question on the steam support forum only yields the ‘Linux is not supported’ answer by a random user.
