Ubuntu(18.04) VM doesn't start on Ubuntu 20.04 on LXD 5.15

Hello, I am having problems with ubuntu VM 18.04 running on a ubuntu 20.04 Host.
If I create a new VM (or restart an existing one) the boot process starts, but hangs when he try to load the main system device. If I start an Ubuntu:18.04 as container… no problems.

 lxc start vm1 --console

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! LABEL=cloudimg-rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

description: |
  LXD is a system container and virtual machine manager.

  It offers a simple CLI and REST API to manage local or remote
  instances,
  uses an image based workflow and support for a variety of advanced
  features.

  Images are available for all Ubuntu releases and architectures as
  well
  as for a wide number of other Linux distributions. Existing
  integrations with many deployment and operation tools, makes it work
  just like a public cloud, except everything is under your control.

  LXD containers are lightweight, secure by default and a great
  alternative to virtual machines when running Linux on Linux.

  LXD virtual machines are modern and secure, using UEFI and
  secure-boot
  by default and a great choice when a different kernel or operating
  system is needed.

  With clustering, up to 50 LXD servers can be easily joined and
  managed
  together with the same tools and APIs and without needing any
  external
  dependencies.

  Supported configuration options for the snap (snap set lxd
  [<key>=<value>...]):

    - ceph.builtin: Use snap-specific Ceph configuration
    [default=false]
    - ceph.external: Use the system's ceph tools (ignores
    ceph.builtin) [default=false]
    - criu.enable: Enable experimental live-migration support
    [default=false]
    - daemon.debug: Increase logging to debug level [default=false]
    - daemon.group: Set group of users that have full control over LXD
    [default=lxd]
    - daemon.user.group: Set group of users that have restricted LXD
    access [default=lxd]
    - daemon.preseed: Pass a YAML configuration to `lxd init` on
    initial start
    - daemon.syslog: Send LXD log events to syslog [default=false]
    - daemon.verbose: Increase logging to verbose level
    [default=false]
    - lvm.external: Use the system's LVM tools [default=false]
    - lxcfs.pidfd: Start per-container process tracking
    [default=false]
    - lxcfs.loadavg: Start tracking per-container load average
    [default=false]
    - lxcfs.cfs: Consider CPU shares for CPU usage [default=false]
    - lxcfs.debug: Increase logging to debug level [default=false]
    - openvswitch.builtin: Run a snap-specific OVS daemon
    [default=false]
    - openvswitch.external: Use the system's OVS tools (ignores
    openvswitch.builtin) [default=false]
    - ovn.builtin: Use snap-specific OVN configuration [default=false]
    - shiftfs.enable: Enable shiftfs support [default=auto]

  For system-wide configuration of the CLI, place your configuration
  in
  /var/snap/lxd/common/global-conf/ (config.yml and servercerts)
commands:
  - lxd.benchmark
  - lxd.buginfo
  - lxd.check-kernel
  - lxd.lxc

Thanks.

Please can you show the command you are using to create the VM so I can try and reproduce?

lxc init ubuntu:18.04 test --vm
lxc start test --console

Not LXD, but the issue is similar here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/265884/mdadm-no-devices-listed-in-conf-file-were-found-debian-8-with-gpt

Not a solution, but have you tried to exit from the rescue shell as it is suggested on stackexchange?

Quote:

If you simply exit from the rescue shell the system will try to continue to boot. If you need to increase rootdelay you can add it to your kernel options in /etc/grub/default and run update-grub (by psusi).

I don’t have an available Ubuntu 20.04 host, so I tried it on Ubuntu 22.04. Your commands worked there, but I’m using the zfs storage driver and there is no “mdadm” line at all in my console. I might completely misinterpret it as I never worked with mdadm, but do you have LVM + mdadm raid? I’m asking because the mdadm errors and storage: lvm in the output of lxc info

I tried images:ubuntu/18.04 as well, but that couldn’t start LXD agent. There was no problem with newer images.

Which storage pool type are you using?

Until the answer, isn’t it what the output of lxc info showed? :slight_smile: At least that’s why I thought it was lvm.

The storage is a plain LVM (no strange configuration as nested lvm…)

Hi, exit put me back on the same shell…

(initramfs) exit
Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! LABEL=cloudimg-rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Hi,

I’ve tried this now on an Ubuntu 20.04 host running 5.4.0-153-generic x86_64 kernel with LXD 5.15, using an LVM storage pool:

Thank you Tomp. This behaviour is very strange!

I had a look at the boot log, could these lines be a problem?

I’m seeing the same things in multiple environments. I typically use btrfs but I tried it in a nested VM just to have some more flexibility to try different things. My test environment is created using:

# Do all tests nested in a new VM with no snap or LXD on purpose
# so we can cleanly choose the LXD channel
lxc launch images:ubuntu/jammy test-images-ubuntu-jammy-vm --vm
# ...wait
lxc shell test-images-ubuntu-jammy-vm
apt install snapd -y
snap install lxd --channel <varies>
snap info lxd # confirm version
lxd init --minimal

I varied over these 4 LXD versions:

  5.14/candidate:   5.14-7072c7b  2023-05-31 (24918) 178MB -
  5.15/stable:      5.15-3fe7435  2023-06-28 (25086) 181MB -
  latest/stable:    5.15-002fa0f  2023-07-04 (25112) 181MB -
  latest/edge:      git-5a1faae   2023-07-19 (25306) 183MB -

creating my test VM fresh between each.

I created nested LXD VMs across these images (always latest since this is fresh after an lxd init --minimal):

lxc launch images:ubuntu/bionic b1 --console --vm
lxc launch ubuntu:bionic b2 --console --vm
lxc launch images:ubuntu/focal f1 --console --vm
lxc launch ubuntu:focal f2 --console --vm
lxc launch images:ubuntu/jammy j1 --console --vm
lxc launch ubuntu:jammy j2 --console --vm

with lxc stop --force and lxc delete between each. The problem only appeared with bionic VMs (so I eventually stopped testing beyond the first focal image which always worked) but what showed was slightly different between the images:ubuntu/bionic and ubuntu:bionic as you’ve observed above, but both failing to the initramfs.

Here are the results.

Interestingly, I first noticed this when I tried starting an old bionic LXD VM I had on my laptop. It used to run but now fails to start because it can’t find it’s root disk during initaramfs:

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

If I shut down all my LXD containers and VMs, then do a snap refresh lxd --channel 5.14/candidate I am able to start that old bionic VM no problem.

So it looks like some recent change in 5.15 prior to

5.15/stable:      5.15-3fe7435  2023-06-28 (25086) 181MB -

I suspect it’s due to the change in uefi firmware to introduce csm support in Lxd 5.15, but so far I’ve had no trouble booting 18.04 which is confusing.

I just did exactly the same thing on my laptop:

lxc launch images:ubuntu/jammy test-images-ubuntu-jammy-vm --vm
lxc shell test-images-ubuntu-jammy-vm
snap install lxd --channel latest/stable
installed:          5.15-002fa0f             (25112) 181MB -

lxd init --minimal

lxc launch images:ubuntu/bionic b1 --console --vm
lxc launch ubuntu:bionic b2 --console --vm

Both bionic VMs started fine :hushed:

Pretty weird!
