UbuCon North America 2024 Call for Papers

UbuCon North America is coming to Green Bay, WI in early August and we’re looking for inspiring speakers from the Ubuntu and broader open source communities to present!

What’s an UbuCon?

UbuCon, short for Ubuntu Conventions, are community-led gatherings where folks from the Ubuntu community and the open source software world come together to share their stories, network with fellow users, and learn from experts. UbuCons take place all over the world with new ones forming all the time. Discover other global UbuCon events.

Who should submit a talk?

UbuCons are first and foremost an Ubuntu community event. Our goal is to spotlight those in the Ubuntu and open source world who are doing incredible things and hopefully inspire all those who attend so they may become presenters of tomorrow. With that in mind, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you using Ubuntu to do something novel or innovative?
  • Are you helping build Ubuntu or Ubuntu software?
  • Are you an Ubuntu advocate helping spread open source around the world?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, you should consider submitting a talk!

Tips for writing a good proposal

Is this your first time submitting a talk proposal or you just want to brush up on your abstract writing skills? Be sure to check out our suggested tips below. Following these tips - and even getting your abstract reviewed by a friend - will increase your chances of having your abstract accepted by the UbuCon organising team!

An engaging title

This is the first thing attendees see and it may be the thing that separates an empty conference room from a full house. Don’t be afraid to be a little more creative in your title. Unleash your inner Shakespeare!

Concise abstract

An abstract is a summary of your talk. It should provide enough information to hook your audience, but not an overwhelming amount. Make sure it checks off the following boxes:

  • What’s the topic?
  • Who’s the audience?
  • What’s the primary takeaway?

Speaker Bio

This is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the audience. Talk a little about yourself and your accomplishments. Let the community know how they can find out more about you and your work, share your social media profiles, and last but certainly not least, be sure to include a good headshot!
