Touchpad problem

I am having a huge problem with the laptop FTCS1000:00 2808:0101 Touchpad which most of the time refuses to accept any clicks of cursor moves; it just refuses to do anything.

The xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is not installed by default and the touchpad uses xinput from where I found its make and model.

The system-process which is shown when using the touchpad varies but is always in the pattern

irq/138-FTCS1000
irq/139-FTCS1000
irq/132-FTCS1000

though the irq number seems to vary at reboot (currently showing irq/133)
Anyone got any clues at all about this; a search has given me no answers.

Clevo NL31 (I think, but the label is almost unreadable)
Xubuntu 24.04,
Pentium® Dual Core Processor 4415U
8GB Kingston SODIMM DDR4 2133MHz.

Are you saying that it is entirely non-responsive?

If you run xev, does it show output for every input from the touchpad?

Yes, it is completely unresponnsive and the majority of actions show nothing in the terminal running xev other than the cursor moving though that is often very erratically.

A mouse that I have to use instead works absolutely fine.

I have tried installing the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package just in case it might help.
But of course, as it wasn’t a synaptics touchpad, It didn’t make a scrap of difference so I uninstalled it and still have to use the mouse for this laptop which is very frustrating.

I am completely baffled and don’t know where to go from here.

My guess: hardware failure.

Xubuntu > Settings > Mouse and Touchpad
By any chance, is the device disabled?

No, it’s not disabled.

Well, in the few minutes between writing my last post above, I have updated my system.
A new kernel version 6.8.0-55 appeared.
As always I accepted this and it appears that the touchpad is now working properly.
I had not noticed this problem when the system was first installed on January 17, 2025, and I can not remember exactly when I first saw it but the 6.8.0-54 previous kernel version was installed February 26, one week ago and I’m hopeful that this new kernel will have solved this.

I’m also a bit surprised and annoyed that if I am correct about the kernel being the cause, that I did not notice this first occurring at that moment.

Fingers crossed!!! I will keep everyone informed if the problem is now gone.

I was unfortunately wrong suggesting the new kernel had solved the problem for me as following a few hours when all was apparently working as it should, all is going badly again this evening.

So now I am beginning to believe wxl had it correct when he suggested a hardware fault.

This is a great pity for me as apart from this problem the machine is brilliant.

I have no idea how easy it is to replace touchpad but will be investigating over the next few days.
