To what size do you recommend MicroStack as suitable solution for production use cases?

Canonical MicroStack is an open source project that enables you to easily deploy a fully-functional OpenStack environment on your workstation or even a virtual machine (VM) in minutes. Even though it was originally designed with testing and development use cases in mind, eliminating the need for dedicated hardware, it is now heading towards its first stable release. This means that it will soon be suitable for production use cases too. Read more…

  • Or even a more primitive question: has the coverage of production environments ever been seen in the horizon of microstack development?

Do you recommend using Microstack’s multi-node solution for a production environment at this time?

We consider the current releases of MicroStack to be generally consumable (Canonical will provide support as part of Ubuntu Pro); that said we do have some core component upgrades to complete in the next few months one of which we know we won’t be able to upgrade to from the current version so that’s worth keeping in mind for now.

Or even a more primitive question: has the coverage of production environments ever been seen in the horizon of microstack development?

Absolutely! We’re working towards a GA release alongside Ubuntu 24.04 LTS - this should have core feature parity with Charmed OpenStack including support for fully automated deployments with MAAS.

If the answer to the above questions is positive, for what size of production environments do you currently recommend using Microstack? Maybe it is easier to answer the question that Microstack is not recommended for which environments?

Right now we’re only recommending MicroStack for smaller multi-node deployments (< 10) however all of the core components scale far beyond that and once we have MAAS integration, deployment and operations of much larger environments will be more achievable.

Do we have to have an odd number of nodes to meet Quorum?

Oh, thanks for the haeds-up! Then, since we are not in a hurry, I think it is better to wait until version 2024.1.
