Suggested this is a kernel issue errors with shutdown involving xhcl_hcd Controller not ready

This is a fresh installation of Ubuntu 22.04.5 (LVM) and during shutdown receive the following:

systemd-shutdown[1]: failed to finalize DM Devices, ignoring
xhcl_hcd 0000:3a:00.0: Controller not ready at resume -19
xhcl_hcd 0000:3a:00.0: PCI post-resume error -19!
xhcl_hcd 0000:3a:00.0: HC died; cleaning up
xhcl_hcd 0000:3a:00.0: Host halt failed, -19

  1. The only usb device plugged in at the moment is a mouse
  2. is the hex number listed a device id and if it is is it referring to the controller
  3. the is a lenovo x390 which recently installed a bios update from 1.75 → 1.80
  4. after communicating reps within the lenovo forum the suggested Corporate ME System update states this should not be installed although in other linux distros the popup message from snap would say apply this update.
  5. since the new installation this message as not appeared
  6. The only way to power down the x390 is to hold down the power button

Any suggestions?

Present kernel is: 6.8.0-56-generic

Please file a bug report as described here.

Thanks for the immediate update and I will submit a bug report.

Peace and Struggle!

Hi, has the bug been fixed ?

@mbnromi the answer is no. I am having a issue submitting the bug. Bug report will not accept the newly genetated GnuPG key to confirm identity. Have to resolve this issue first before submitting the bug.

Peace and Struggle

@brettgrand @mbnromi today I submitted a bug report. The LVM for this laptop is functioning correctly the suggestion that there may be a issue specifically related to the shutdown process, particularly with device-mapper (DM) devices, which are often used with LVM (Logical Volume Manager) or other storage management systems. I will update soon.

Can you add the URL for that bug here, please?

@juergh

That looks completely unrelated to the LVM issues you mentioned above.

Finalizing investigation a resolution I come to accept the following about why this maybe happening:

The arrangement of PCI slots and IRQ assignments is typically managed by the BIOS/UEFI firmware and can often be related to the kernel version or BIOS settings.

The xHCI (eXtensible Host Controller Interface) issue could be related to the inability to perform a full shutdown of your laptop. When the xHCI controller (which manages USB 3.0 ports) fails to initialize properly or has IRQ assignment issues, it can lead to various problems, including:

Power Management Issues

Device Initialization Failures

Kernel Panic or Hang

Now the error does not show up and the laptop just hangs.

Today, I spoke with Intel about this issue and shared it with an Intel representative. Intel is currently looking into the matter.

If it is kernel thing, it could be also some irqs or something acpi broken but that could be force irq initialized or other tuning to find out or help find out what is borked. But kernel has various parts and subsystems…

and recently according news also some kernel patent regs passed away, so something could be broken also on that part, if it is that unprobable thing… who knows…

systemctl --type=service could also show running services

Today I received the following:

"While host controllers handle USB devices, our support for laptops and pre-built desktop PCs with Intel components is restricted due to lack of system documentation and limited troubleshooting capabilities. And if you need drivers, they should come from your system manufacturer’s support team’s driver page because their drivers are specialized while ours are generic.

"My benchmarking period began on December 28, 2024 and continues to the present. The download of current drivers is complete. We are currently prospecting a project, and the client has a number of Lenovo X Series laptops that they want to look into using before making any purchases. Now I know what steps to follow to hopefully remedy the problem.
