Steam window closes unexpectedly

Hello.

First post here  I am having a similar problem:

  • Kubuntu 24.04
  • Kernel 6.8.0-60 64 bits

Steam is working well. I have choosen the proton hotfix and proton 9.0-4. The game (Europa, demo version) says “lauching”, then “running” , then the window of the game opens and closes immediatelly.
Any tip on how I could find the problem?

Thank you very much!!

Can you try the HWE kernel 6.11 (linux-generic-hwe-24.04)

This thread is about video playback in the game previews crashing steam, your issue does not even sound remotely related, pretty please open a fresh topic…

Hi

I don’t know how to do it, but I’ll search online and get back to you, if i am successful.

Just:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-24.04

(and reboot)

should be enough … if you run uname -r after the reboot you should see a 6.11 kernel in use…

I did it. It seems like it creates some problems:

  • Only one of the hdmi ports is working now, so I only have one screen
  • I have always in the middle of the screen a square saying “out of range”
  • I can’t really start the game because drop menus open somewhere else on the page.

Maybe it is better to go back, if possible?

You did not mention to us what graphics card you have, if it uses a proprietary driver like nvidia, you might need to update that as well …

That’s true.

I have this one: Graphics card: NVIDIA GA104 [GeForce RTX 3070 Ti]

This is the info it shows:

sudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:570

All the available drivers are already installed.

I installed it again, despite the message, and reboot. Steam managed to “start” the game, that means I got a black window that did not close immediately, but then I got this message before closing:

LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 258]
Result Failed
at
D:/Build//++EU4/Sync/Engine/Source/Runtime/Windows/D3D11RHI/Private/D3D11Viewport.cpp:443

with error E_FAIL

Not sure why, but I reinstalled kubuntu 24.04 from a usb stick and now I can open the game. It does not work properly as everything is super slow and jumping from frame to frame.

How does it work? I mark this topic as “closed”? There is no really a solution but I should open another one relating the lag, right?

If your original issue is solved, but you have a new one, then yes, open another thread with an appropriate title and you will get better (and more) support.

It could be useful to provide as much info about your system as you can. For instance with this command:

inxi -b

relevant info of your system can be copied and pasted (highlighting the output and pressing Control-E to format it as code).

You may need to install inxi first:

sudo apt install inxi

If you’re downloading from the app center, can you maybe look into a flatpak version of steam or download it from apt and see if it changes anything?

I can’t find a way to close the topic. Is it because I didn’t create it? Anyone knows how to?

You should be able to mark one of the posts as the solution if that is relevant here.

If not and you want it closed, then we can also do that for you.

Let us know.

Thanks.

the discussion was moved to another topic. so, I marked there the solution.
I think then this could be closed, to not create more “trash” for someone searching around this topic.

Thank you!
