It’s possible the drive isn’t getting enough power from the USB port. Is it plugged directly into the computer, or a USB hub or other external device?
I have an external /dvd/CD RW device and it has its own fairly substantial external power supply.
You might consider an externally powered USB hub as a way to provide the power your device requires.
