Requesting to add "scrolling speed" for both Mouse & Touchpad on Ubuntu 25.04 and later

Hello everyone, it’s great to see Ubuntu 20th anniversary special :grinning:, however I was wonder this another great idea to see Ubuntu settings should include an option for both Mouse & Touchpad to provide scrolling speed like on both Windows & Mac, because they got scrolling speed if needed.

So will a “scrolling speed” settings option be included for 25.04 and later to make Ubuntu become more useful?

Here’s a screenshot that should look like, as an example.

I hope I’m not causing trouble by the way.

Hey @romactu1 !

These are pretty good ideas. As an FYI, most of Ubuntu’s interface comes from work upstream with GNOME, so most of these feature requests need to be filed with them.

Ubuntu takes that upstream work and adapts it, re-styles it, adds a couple of extensions, and ships it with a few patches here and there, but not much else is done downstream if it can be avoided, so major feature requests really should be taken to the GNOME developers.

Just an FYI as a developer, not as a moderator.

Cheers!

Lovely @elcste, let see they’ll accept that on GNOME 48 and later. :grinning:

This has been a pain point for many years, as you can see in Bug #124440 “[enhancement] Ubuntu needs a way to set mouse wheel...” : Bugs : gnome-control-center package : Ubuntu

Personally I feel it’s the only real advantage that OSX and ChromeOS still have over desktop Linux - the ability to touchpad scroll with precision. Open source politics aside, we also have multiple toolkits/apps it would have to be integrated into.

It’s also unclear how one would make speed consistent across toolkits/apps. A few years ago I raised it with the libinput author and he suggested the right default touchpad scrolling speed is the unaccelerated cursor movement speed from the same touchpad. I agree with that thought, but at this stage would accept a solution that is slightly accelerated if that gets it over the line.

Hey @vanvugt, what’s up with your reply today? Oh yea :grinning:

This also talks about both Mouse & Touchpad, also, one user at GNOME discourse according to @elcste is also requesting it to add Scrolling speed which it should be supporting both Mouse and Touchpad, and one user says it’s been requested for the past 3 years. This link you sent talks about Mouse & Touchpad Scrolling speed.

But thanks for letting us know, especially it says it’s been posted since 2007-07-06.
Cheers with Romactu.

The first post here says “for both Mouse & Touchpad”. And the bug I mentioned also discusses both mouse and touchpad. Although the bug is not well triaged right now, and I recall we have other bugs covering the topic of touchpads more explicitly.

I know there’s a big difference in how the two are implemented, but it is at least now normal and consistent to discuss both mouse and touchpad scrolling speed in the same conversation. Partly because the settings are near each other in gnome-control-center, and partly because if you start discussing just one of them, someone will inevitably mention the other.

older one could say: man xorg.conf but thats a way to choose your drive for food vendor delivery when acpi still not in specs and that bothers current developers so no time for some tools from driven specs in some js gui gnome tool and some xorg libs needs refurbish even when there is maybe some wlibs and tools in progress when there is xcb hackers time now…
