Proposal: Add the moderator bot and Ubuntu CoC links to subspaces of the Ubuntu Community space

Good morning/evening, and thanks for taking the time to read this! I’m Aaron from the Ubuntu Matrix Council. It’s amazing to see how far the Ubuntu Matrix community has come – we’ve grown into a vibrant space where users can connect, collaborate, and share ideas. And as we continue to grow, we’re excited to see where this community will go next!

However, with growth comes new challenges, and unfortunately, spam is one of them. To ensure we maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone, we need to take some proactive steps to address this issue. Your feedback and involvement are essential as we work to protect our spaces and ensure they remain welcoming for all.

TL;DR: Let’s add the Ubuntu Matrix moderation bot to all subspaces under Ubuntu Community.

The issue

Currently admins of spaces under the Ubuntu Community space can add rooms to their spaces without adding the Ubuntu moderation bot or putting an Ubuntu Code of Conduct link in the room topic. This results in rooms under the Ubuntu Community space being vulnerable to spam attacks. As it stands, if a room doesn’t fix this, the Ubuntu Matrix Council has to remove the whole subspace containing the offending room.

Additionally, while we have the rooms under the Ubuntu Community space protected from spam, we don’t have the spaces themselves protected with our moderation bot. This means spammers are able to hang around in Ubuntu Community spaces even if they’ve been banned from rooms, allowing them to cause further problems (i.e., spam DMs).

We want to fix both.

The solution

If all subspaces under Ubuntu Community add the moderator bot and CoC links to the spaces as well (not just to rooms), it solves both these issues. The moderator bot can ban spammers and malicious users from the spaces, and the Ubuntu Matrix Council can use the bot to remove individual rooms from subspaces in the event a room can’t or won’t add the mod bot and CoC link as required.

The Ubuntu Matrix Council and Ubuntu Matrix Operators will only use these powers:

  • to defend rooms and address CoC violations
  • or to intervene on the request of mods and admins,
  • or to fix non-compliant spaces where the admins are not responding appropriately/timely
