Ubuntu Version:
24.10
Desktop Environment (if applicable):
XFCE
Problem Description:
Recently I updated my system from 24.04 LTS to 24.10. However, I also have an external monitor plugged in, and after the update I’ve run into some issues. Notably:
- Whatever desktop wallpaper I have on the external monitor doesn’t seem to work. Instead, when I move around windows, the desktop gains a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect where it looks like many windows are present at once.
- Games launched on the external monitor don’t appear to function properly, often displaying a black screen. Additionally,
nvidia-smi
reveals they use a far smaller amount of dedicated GPU memory than normal. Games launched using the laptop’s monitor appear to run like usual.
Relevant System Information:
My laptop has an integrated GPU and a Nvidia Dedicated GPU - a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. I’ve got nvidia-driver-570 installed.
Currently the prime-select-status
is set to query
.
Screenshots or Error Messages:

What I’ve Tried:
Unplugging and replugging the external monitor:
Unplugging the monitor kicked me back to the laptop’s monitor, but when I replugged in the monitor afterward, both screens turned dark, allowing me to see my mouse cursor but nothing else.
Switching from on-demand to Performance Mode:
This lets both screens function like normal, and games do load even if they’re started on the external monitor, though this does result in more GPU Memory being used compared to On-Demand.
Changing to nvidia-driver-550:
When I tried this, one monitor or another would simply not work/be detected by the computer.
