Onboard sound investigation on AMD machine

Somehow my machine goes crazy if i connect my onboard main audio output to the speakers. It likes to sent to an usb card. I cleaned any dirt on the mobo but still not really useful. I took the graphics card out and put it in an intel machine and now that thing has low latency perfect sound even from HDMI. I am just troubleshooting it. It has been like this since pipewire. I can understand that the signal route is now shorter than before.(almost short-cuttening) Also it can be the case of my upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04.2. I just don’t believe that any of them duracaps on the mobo is bad. I even blamed me putting my guitar-preamp to on while line-in is activated. Now i protect it with a scripted alsactl restore command. Them 4x in (+2) onboard card can still be used for its inputs and i use its outputs on demand so that is ok. When i get to the bottom of this i will post here.
Yes i promise myself to quit El-Cheapo on this AS(s)Rock machine and buy a decent interface this year but still i want to know for sure…

Onboard audio is known to be problematic for pro audio, so this isn’t surprising. I get much higher performance from my Beheringer UMC404HD, even though it’s connected via USB.

HDMI, per mine and Len Ovens’ research, requires a minimum buffer of 4096, so I’m surprised you’re getting low latency sound from it.

By the way, for PipeWire to output to an interface without sample rate or buffer conversion, the interface’s profile must be set to “Pro Audio”, which is easy enough to do from the volume widget:

That said, if your inputs are working great but your output is causing problems, I’d suspect there’s an invisible hardware problem with the output. Even then, input from one interface to another is, at least in theory, almost nil due to PipeWire’s zero-latency internal processing (for those that don’t believe me, it’s somewhere in PipeWire’s official changelog when this was implemented).

Okay, this at least lead me to the conclusion that i am not the only one with this. So i could leave it like this. I will do one more test with my new RX-550 graphics card. On the other machine i can even reach 128 buffer with it and that one is an oldy. I put the card in here and try to output to headphones from the screen audio output. If this won’t work correctly than it is just the design of the mobo. That will be my end conlclusion (buy better audio card )

To be short on this; test with RX was no good. My guess is this is still due to my upgrading from 20.04 because on live .iso it works. And even my old one works with 256 buffer in my other machine (and serving). Next time gadget…:guitar:
