Nvidia GPU not recognized by OS

Ubuntu Version:

24.04.2 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):

Problem Description:

I just installed Ubuntu today and after setting everything up and downloading all drivers I noticed that my Nvidia Gtx 1650 isn't being used by the system, but instead its using the integrated graphics card in my amd processor.

Relevant System Information:

Nvidia gtx 1650 gpu
AMD Ryzen™ 5 4600H with Radeon™ Graphics
32 gb ram

Screenshots or Error Messages:

When executing nvidia-smi this error comes up:
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

What I’ve Tried:

Blacklist noveau driver in case it interferes with the nvidia driver
Install an older driver ( nvidia 470)
Update to latest Nvidia driver

The GPU cant be bootlocked or at least I cant check it since my hp laptop is bootlocked.

Are you adding Nvidia drivers from a repository other than Ubuntu (even the Nvidia repository)? If not, you should just be able to do ubuntu-drivers install from the command line to automatically get the correct driver and have it configured.

If you did more than that (or the Additional Drivers tab in Software & Sources), you did it wrong.

The only solution is to purge that repository and any packages installed from it. Might be quicker to reinstall.

Right, Ill try to install the drivers with the command and if that doesn’t work I’ll just reinstall. Thanks for the quick answer.

Alright, thanks a lot, after reinstalling mvidia-smi now works and ubuntu recognizes my graphics card.
