Network file share...unable to create

Hi all,

I am new to Kumbutu 24.04 and Linux, but I have it up and running. I purchased a specialty version called Stellarmate to control my telescope. I am currently installing backup programs to backup both system files and user files. My source PC is on the same network as the destination PC via wired ethernet.

So, my goal is to keep a backup both locally via usb drive and via shared network drive. Both of these drives are secondary drives, not containing the main OS system. I have successfully backed up to my local usb drive, and now I’d like to go over the network using programs called BacPaq and Timeshift.

I use a VNC program to log onto the desktop of the destination PC (at the telescope), and I use KDE partition manager to partition and format the secondary drive in ext4. Then, I mount it using Dolphin and attempt to share it using >properties>share in the dialogue. I get a notice that I need to add permissions, and when I click ok, the update fails and permissions revert to their previous state. Then, when I go back to the dialogue and ignore the add permissions pop-up and click on share and give everyone full control, I get the error, “net usershare add: cannot share path /media/stellarmate/Data as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line “usershare owner only = false” to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this.”

Please help! Ive looked over the internet, and most posts are at least 8 years old. I am unable to follow their directions, too. Ive tried doing the above at the PC as well as over VNC.

Thank You,

Paul

That location in the /media directory is outside the user /home directory so it is owned by root and you would need to use sudo to make changes.

Did you add the line suggest to the smb.conf file as suggested? I’ve never used Samba so can’t help with that but am wonderirng why you would use it rather than the native nfs if the drive you are using to share is a Linux (ext4) filesystem.

Hi,

I still learning Linux, so this would be something to look into. Ill definitely check out non Samba sharing!
