My Lubuntu update program has 75 “security related” updates waiting in the que but my install updates button is inactive. Being fairly new to Lubuntu I have to ask if this is a common occurance or is there something wrong with my system?
I shut my system down every time I log off so restarts haven’t solved the problem. I did do the manual process from rubi1200 and it worked. However I haven’t had any new updates since then so I don’t know if the new ones will get stuck. We shall see.
The manual process produced 9 pages of text in Libre Office so I won’t post the whole thing here. A week or so ago I installed Bleachbit on my system and used it once. It was not a clean install but it ran ok afterward so I did not give it any thought.
The manual upgrade made me stop and do a fix on Bleachbit as shown below:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
bleachbit : Depends: python3-psutil but it is not installed
Recommends: python3-notify but it is not installable
Recommends: python3-scandir but it is not installable
Recommends: gir1.2-ayatanaappindicator3-0.1 but it is not installed
After the Bleachbit fix everything upgraded smoothly. Could this be the reason for the hangups?
Yes, that suggests something very wrong.
Security Updates should generally not be “queued” at all.
On a properly-working Ubuntu system (including Lubuntu), your system should check for and install security updates several times daily and entirely automatically. You shouldn’t even notice it happening.
Unless, of course, you disabled that feature.
Ubuntu help venues have a long history of folks complaining about damage caused by Bleachbit. Learn how to use it wisely so you aren’t one of them.
Ubuntu is not like Windows. Windows habits (like the profligate use of Bleachbit) may lead you to trouble.
Ubuntu (including Lubuntu) is designed to be a safe-by-default and secure-by-default OS. You generally don’t need tweaks or add-ons to “harden” or “secure” it further. Open Source developers care deeply about user safety, security, and privacy, and they take great pride in their work.
